No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas vs. Temple Owls Preview

The Hoyas (8-0) have yet to lose this season and have beaten one ranked team already, Missouri, and they will face a good test tonight facing Temple (5-2) in their house. College basketball lines have Georgetown as a slight 1.5-point favorite in this game with a total of 125.5.

In their last games Georgetown beat Utah State 68-51 last Saturday night and Temple beat Maryland 64-61 also on Saturday.

Temple has won 10 straight home games and their last loss at the Liacouras Center was to Kansas back in January when the Jayhawks were the #1 team in the nation.

The Hoyas have a great 3-point shooting squad, as in their November games they shot 44.9% from downtown and hit at least 8 long balls in 6 of their first 7 games of the season. However, in their win over Utah State on Saturday they went cold from deep only going 2/9 from deep. Georgetown head coach John Thomson III, who will have his best start with a win tonight, stated about the Utah State win, “Our team has done and is doing a good job of taking what the defense gives you. We don’t have to make the 3s to win games. “Our goal offensively is to get a good shot, I don’t care whether it comes in three seconds or 33 seconds.” They will have to step up in this game against a stingy Temple defense.

The Owls will have to win this game with their solid defense, which is only giving up an average of 55.4 points per game. They also are holding opponents to only 37.2% shooting from the field and both of those averages are the best in the Atlantic 10. If their defense does not play well they will be toast, as their offense only averages 62.7 ppg, which ranks 288th in the nation.

Temple will have to play especially good D on Hoyas’ G Austin Freeman, who leads Georgetown in scoring averaging 20.1 ppg, and G Chris Wright (14.8 ppg). Wright was named the Big East player of the week last week, as he had 21 points in 2 Georgetown wins. He is shooting over 50% from the field and he also leads the Hoyas in assists per game (6.8).

Freeman was tallied as the pre-season Big East Player of the Year, but he struggled in the Utah State win only scoring 9 points.

Temple is led on offense by the G duo of Ramone Moore (12.1 ppg) and Juan Fernandez (11.4 ppg). Unlike the Hoyas the Owls are not a good 3-point shooting team, as neither Moore nor Fernandez is shooting over 23.5% from deep.

Both teams are not great rebounding teams, but it is important that the Hoyas hit the defensive glass since the Owls are only showing a FG% of 43.6 while the Hoyas rank 8th in the nation at 51%. That responsibility falls on Owls’ forwards Lavoy Allen (6.9 rpg) and Scootie Randall (5.7 rpg). These 2 also have to worry about Georgetown F Julian Vaughn, who leads the team in rebounding and is averaging 3 offensive rebounds per game. They cannot allow the Hoyas to get 2nd chance opportunities off offensive boards.

Last year in the season opener Georgetown beat Temple 46-45.

Both teams have a solid backcourt, but the Hoyas have the advantage, as they can bomb from beyond the 3-point arc. They are also a slightly better team on the boards and they will score some points off the offensive glass tonight. Temple will make this a close game, just like last season, but also like last season they will lose, as Georgetown will win this game and cover the 1.5-point spread.

Betting Trends:

This season Georgetown is 6-1 ATS and Temple is 5-2 ATS.
Georgetown is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Temple is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games against teams with a winning road record and they have covered the spread 4 times in their last 5 games against teams from the Big East.

Pick: Georgetown -1.5
