Indiana Hoosiers vs. No. 17 Wisconsin Badgers Preview

Tonight in a Big 10 match up the 17th ranked Wisconsin Badgers (13-4) host the reeling Indiana Hoosiers (10-8). Indiana finally stopped the bleeding in their last win, which snapped their 6-game losing streak. NCAA lines have Wisconsin as a big 13.5-point home favorite in this game with a total of 127.

In their last games both teams played on Saturday and the Hoosiers beat the Michigan Wolverines 80-61 and Wisconsin beat the Illinois Fighting Illini 76-66.

This season Wisconsin has been a solid betting team going 9-4 ATS while Indiana has not going 5-7 ATS. In the last 4 games between these 2 Big 10 rivals the favorite has covered the spread every time and Indiana is only 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games at Wisconsin.

The Badgers have won 13 straight home games, but they have yet to win consecutive conference games this season. Wisconsin is 3-2 in Big 10 play and 2 of those wins came over ranked teams.

Indiana is trying to get back to national prominence, but it will not likely be this season. They have lost 6 straight to the Badgers and in that span they have shot less than 40% from the field and have averaged only 53.6 ppg. The Hoosiers have lost 10 straight games on the road and the last time they won an away game was almost a year ago.

Wisconsin has struggled shooting the rock in their last couple games, but their defense in their 3 Big 10 home wins has been stellar holding opponents to an average of 36.1% in 3 games.

Indiana head coach Tom Crean recently stated about this game, “This is going to be a great test for (our) guys.” That is a major understatement and not only did the Badgers kill the Hoosiers in both games last season, but Indiana will be without starter Maurice Creek (8.3 ppg), who was injured in the win over Michigan.

Wisconsin is not a high scoring team and they are not very good on the boards, but they have one of the best defenses in the nation ranking 4th in the country in opponents’ points allowed (56.4 ppg).

For the Hoosiers to pull off the upset they will need a good game from F Christian Watford (16.4 ppg) and Verdell Jones III (12.4 ppg), who combined to score 41 points in the win over Michigan. If the Badgers can shut these guys down they will be in good shape, as the Hoosiers do not have a lot of scoring options.

Watford and G Jordan Hulls (10 ppg) are each shooting above 40% from beyond the 3-point arc and they must hit the deep ball tonight.

The main guy that Indiana has to worry about is Badgers’ leading scorer Jon Leuer (19.2 ppg), who is 6’10” and also the leading rebounder for Wisconsin averaging 7.4 rpg. Watford is the only Hoosiers’ player that is averaging over 5 boards per game and Indiana has to hit the glass as a team tonight.

Badgers’ G Jordan Taylor (17 ppg) is key tonight, as if the Hoosiers can shut him down they can drop down in the lane to keep Wisconsin from getting easy buckets in the paint.

Indiana has lost 21 straight road games against teams ranked in the top 25 since beating 13th ranked Iowa way back in 2002.

Wisconsin is not a high scoring team, but they will win this game with their defense. The Hoosiers have had no luck against the Badgers recently and while they will lose this game it will not be a blowout and they will cover the 13.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Indiana is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games and Wisconsin is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games.

The betting trends point to the Over tonight, which may be a good pick even though the Badgers have one of the best defensive teams in the nation. Indiana has an Over record of 7-3 in their last 10 games and Wisconsin has an Over record of 5-1-1 in their last 7 games.

Pick: Indiana +13.5
