Austin Peay Governors vs. No. 19 Memphis Tigers Preview

Memphis (7-1) blew out of the gates this season winning their first 7 games, but they lost their first game of the season to 4th ranked Kansas in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Austin Peay (6-5) is coming off a 60-point win, yeah 60 point win, in their last game, but you have to take that with a grain of salt since they were facing Division III Fontbonne. Who? College basketball lines have Memphis as 14.5-point favorites in this game and a total has not been posted at time of writing.

In their last games Austin Peay beat Fontbonne 112-52 and Memphis lost to Kansas 81-68.

This season Memphis is only 2-5 ATS and Austin Peay is 4-3 ATS.

Memphis has a great offense ranking 11th in the nation in scoring (83.1 ppg) while Austin Peay ranks a respectable 65th (76.5 ppg).

For the Governors to have any chance at an upset they will need a big game from G TyShwan Edmondson (19.5 ppg), who is the team’s leading scorer and is shooting just over 35% from 3-point land. If Memphis can contain Edmonson the Tigers should have no problem winning this game.

Austin Peay does not have one true frontcourt player that is scoring in double figures, as Edmonson and G Alton Williams (10 ppg) form a solid backcourt, but the frontcourt for the Governors is pretty thin.

The Tigers will be shorthanded in this game since leading scorer G/F Wesley Witherspoon (13 ppg 4.6 rpg) and G/F D.J. Stephens (2.9 ppg 3.1 rpg) are out with injuries and F Angel Garcia (6.1 ppg 3 rpg) is leaving school to play pro ball in Spain. The Governors have issues of their own, as they lost 2nd leading scorer Anthony Campbell a couple weeks back to a season-ending knee injury.

The Governors are a not a tall team and they are not a good rebounding team only ranking 219th in the nation in boards per game. Their C is John Fraley, who is only 6’8” and he is the only player for Austin Peay that is averaging over 5 boards per game (7.5 rpg). The Governors will have to help him out on the glass, as even though the Tigers lost their leading rebounder in Witherspoon the Tigers rebound well as a team.

Obviously Memphis’ last opponent Kansas is a better team than Austin Peay, but they have to play better than they did against the Jayhawks or they may be upset. In that game the Tigers only shot 37% from the floor and they played bad defense allowing Kansas to shoot 57.1% from the floor and 54.5% from 3-point land.

Even though they lost the game by 13 points the Tigers forced the Jayhawks into 20 turnovers so the Governors have to be careful with the rock and not turn the ball over. That will not be easy against a fast and athletic Memphis squad.

Memphis has played Austin Peay 19 times going 15-4 and they are 13-1 facing them at home. The Governors have only faced one ranked team this season when they were killed by Purdue 87-65 on November 23rd.

Memphis is minus a few players in this game, especially their leading scorer and rebounder, but they will still come out and play a great game against a much weaker Austin Peay team. The Tigers will run ragged in this game and score at will easily winning and covering the 14.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Austin Peay is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above 60% and has an Under record of 7-2 in their last 9 games following a win.
Memphis is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 home games, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Over record of 5-0 in their last 5 games following a loss.

Pick: Memphis -14.5
