There is a lot at stake when in-state rivals Washington and Washington State square off for a third time this season in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pac-10 championship tournament.

Both teams have NCAA Tournament aspirations. The Huskies were a ranked team for much of the season, and battled with Arizona and UCLA for the regular season championship until the final weekend. The Huskies have an RPI of 46 with two wins against UCLA and a season split with Arizona along with quality losses to Michigan State and Kentucky.

The Cougars have had a winning program this season, and this included two head-to-head wins against the Huskies along with quality wins out-of-conference against Baylor and Gonzaga. Yet, with an RPI of 75 in a league that only figures to get three teams into the NCAA Tournament, the Cougars likely need to win this game and post one additional victory this week for a shot at the big dance.

Washington is the third-best scoring team in the entire nation, averaging 84 points per contest thanks to a field goal percentage of 47.2 percent. Isaiah Thomas and Matthew Bryan-Amaning, both of whom are averaging over 16 points per contest, led the Huskies in scoring this season. The Huskies are also ranked in the top fifteen nationally in both rebounds and assists.

Nevertheless, the Cougars won both games against the Huskies this season because they did a tremendous job of playing defense. In the first victory at home in Pullman, Washington State held Washington to 37.1 percent shooting from the floor. In the second triumph in Seattle just 11 days ago, the Huskies again were ineffective as the Cougars held them to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field.

Klay Thompson is the Cougars leading scorer for the season, averaging a league-best 21.4 points per contest. He combined to score 51 points in those two victories over Washington.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Washington

Sure, the Huskies come in having lost three of their last five, and indeed the Cougars have won both previous matchups. However, Washington isn’t assured of anything yet, and they will play this game with a chip firmly planted on their shoulders.
