Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Loyola Marymount Lions Preview
Tonight in a big West Coast Conference game the Loyola Marymount Lions (9-15) host the Gonzaga Bulldogs. NCAAB lines have Gonzaga as big 8.5-point away favorites in this game with a total of 143.5.
In their last games both teams played on Saturday with LMU losing to St. Mary’s 79-70 and Gonzaga losing to Memphis 62-58.
Gonzaga has been a mainstay in the Big Dance, but they are in danger of missing out this season. They have won the WCC title 10 years running, but they are only at 5-3 in conference play this season and they already lost to St. Mary’s, who is in first place at 8-1. LMU is tied with San Diego in the basement of the WCC at 1-8 and they have lost 7 of their last 8 games including their last 2.
This season the Bulldogs have been pretty even money at 10-10-1 ATS while LMU is only 7-12 ATS. Gonzaga is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 games with LMU.
These 2 teams met in mid January and Gonzaga was at home and killed LMU by 20 points.
To say LMU has to shoot the ball a little better than they did in their first meeting against Gonzaga is an understatement, as in that game they shot 27.3% from the field. F Drew Viney (15.5 ppg) is the Lions’ leading scorer and he did have 18 points in the first match up, but he will need help on offense from G Vernon Teel (12.8 ppg) and G Anthony Ireland (9.9 ppg).
One big question for the Lions is can they contain 7-foot C Robert Sacre (13.5 ppg 6.8 rpg)? In the first meeting between these 2 WCC rivals the big guy had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots. If he has another big game the Lions will lose. G Steven Gray (14.9 ppg) is the leading scorer for the Bulldogs and he is almost hitting on 40% of his 3-pointers this season.
Gray may be the key, as if he can hit his J the Lions will not be able to pack the lane to stop Sacre.
Gonzaga has not had the best season and they may be a bubble team come NCAA tourney time, but they are simply much better than LMU on both ends of the court. The Bulldogs will cruise to an easy win tonight and cover the 8.5-point spread.
