The Purdue Boilermakers will try to get more production from their bench as they travel to the Kohl Center to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in a Big 10 bout on Tuesday night.

Purdue was able to bounce back after getting poundied by Ohio State last week with a 73-61 win over a ranked Minnesota team on Saturday. JaJuan Johnson, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, made eight of 13 field goals to notch his sixth straight game with at least 20 points, netting 24 as the Boilermakers maintained their 2nd place marker in the conference.

Johnson and E’Twaun Moore are both All Big Ten candidates this year, but the Boilermakers bench only goes two deep on a good night, and that has been troublesome. The duo usually combine for over half of the team’s scoring, as the Boilermakers as a whole are only averaging 74.4 points per game. However, there are a few others that can contribute including Lewis Jackson and Ryne Smith, both who like to put up points from the perimeter.

Purdue has endured its 23rd ranked schedule going 7-2 in the Big Ten and 4-3 on the road this season and 2-1 against teams ranked in the top 25.

Offensively the Boilermakers are shooting 45.4 percent from the floor and are averaging 36 offensive rebounds per game. Johnson is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game and Moore is averaging 5.7. Defensively Purdue’s opponents score 60.7 points per game and shoot 41.5 percent from the floor, as Purdue is 106th in the nation in defensive rebounding.

That kind of solid  defense will make things tough on the Badgers who were reminded that there are no gimmies in college hoops, as they were beaten by a determined Penn State squad that a ended a 12-game losing streak over eight years to Wisconsin with a 56-52 win on Saturday. Jon Leuer led the Badgers with 18 points.

Wisconsin is a perfect 11-0 at home and 5-3 in Big Ten play.

Offensively they are averaging 69.5 points per game and are shooting nearly 45 percent from the field, but they are 273rd in offensive rebounding. Leuer leads the team with an average 19.1 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. Jordan Taylor is also a major contributor with 17.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and assists per game. Defensively Wisconsin allows just 56 points per game as their opponents shoot 40.2 percent against them and they are 30th in the country in defensive rebounding.

Matt’s Free Pick:  Wisconsin – I expect this one to be a hard fought battle with the team grabbing the most boards winning. Purdue is one of the better teams in the nation and has two of the best players in the country and I think they make Wisconsin try and defend them inside. However, endurance will also factor into this game, so Wisconsin’s bench should give them just enough of an edge behind the manic crowd at the Kohl Center to eke out the win.
