Duke Blue Devils vs. St. Johns Red Storm Preview

On a Sunday afternoon game St. John’s (11-8) hosts defending National Champion and 3rd ranked Duke (19-1). The Red Storm started the first half of the season well, but they have faltered as of late losing 4 of their last 5 games including their last 3.

Duke has been only a mediocre betting team on the season going 10-9 ATS while St. John’s has been a less than stellar bet going 7-11 ATS.

In their last games Duke crushed Boston College 84-68 on Thursday night while St. John’s was killed by Georgetown 77-52 on Wednesday night.

On January 12th the Blue Devils lost their only game and it cost them the #1 ranking. However, since that loss they have won 4 straight games and all the games were blowouts.

St. Johns has lost 2 straight games against ranked teams and they lost those games by an average of 25 ppg.

This game is not a good match for the Red Storm to say the least, as their defense only ranks 136th in the nation in opponents’ points allowed and they will be facing a Duke squad that ranks 4th in the nation in scoring. St. John’s may have to rely on their D, as their offense only ranks 189th in the nation in scoring.

For the Red Storm to have any chance in this game they will have to contain G Nolan Smith (20.5 ppg) and F Kyle Singler (17.9 ppg). These guys play a great inside-outside game and if they score near their season averages St. John’s will be in trouble.

St. John’s only has 3 players that are averaging in double figures led by G Dwight Hardy (14.5 ppg). He and F Justin Brownlee (13.2 ppg) will have to provide most of the offense in this game facing a Duke defense that ranks 65th in the nation.

Besides having to keep Duke from scoring a ton of points the Red Storm also have to keep them off the boards. In their last 2 losses St. John’s has been out-rebounded and they do not have a lot of size in the paint and they have to team up to keep Duke’s 6’10” leading rebounder Mason Plumlee from dominating the glass.

St. John’s is basically out-matched in this game on both sides of the court. Even though the Red Storm are technically at home at Madison Square Garden the Blue Devils play well on the national stage and they will come out and win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Duke is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and St. John’s is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss.
