The top-seeded team in the Pac-10 Tournament, the Arizona Wildcats, looks to enhance their positioning for the NCAA Tournament when they face Oregon State in quarterfinal action from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

The Wildcats won the regular season championship in the last season before the Pac-10 becomes the Pac-12. This is the 10th Pac-10 Conference since the league brought the post-season tournament format back in 2002.

The Beavers advanced to the quarterfinals after posting a 69-67 victory over Stanford in the opening round on Wednesday. Jared Cunningham made eight free throws in the final 1:05, and led Oregon State with 24 points.

Arizona would like to get things going this month with a victory in greater Los Angeles. They lost late-season games to USC at the Galen Center and to UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. The Wildcats hope that a third venue in Tinsel town, Staples Center, will provide a better result.

The Wildcats are led by the scoring of Derrick Williams. The sophomore forward from nearby La Mirada, California, was second in the entire conference in scoring at 18.8 points per game. Williams scored in double figures in all but one game this entire season. Additionally, Williams was tops in the conference and sixth best in the entire country in field goal percentage at 61.2 percent.

Despite not having any significant quality non-conference wins, the Wildcats will be a formidable opponent in the NCAA tournament. After missing the tournament last season, Sean Miller’s squad looks to return to March Madness. It would mark the 26th time in the past 27 years that they have participated in the big dance.

Arizona split the season series with Oregon State, with the home team winning each time. Wednesday’s victory by the Beavers over Stanford was just their second all season away from Corvallis.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Arizona – While it may not have been the greatest of seasons for the Pac-10, the Wildcats have been the best team in the league for most of the campaign. Figure on seeing them in the championship game this Saturday.
