The No. 7 San Diego State Aztecs rebounded from their first loss of the season by thumping Wyoming 96-57 on Saturday and will look to make it two in row when they tip off against the Colorado State Rams on Wednesday in a Mountain West Conference showdown.

The Aztecs opened up with a 14-0 run, while sophomore guard Chase Tapley got a career-high 24 points against the Cowboys. Tapley had three of a school-record 17 3-pointers for SDSU, who shot 53.8 percent while moving back into a first-place tie with BYU in the Mountain West.

As for the Rams, Andy Ogide scored a career-high 28 points in Saturday’s 74-68 win at Utah. It was Colorado State’s fourth win in five games as they maintained sole possession of third place in the conference. They are 7-2 at home this season but have dropped four in a row there to ranked teams as part of a 12-game slide against top 25 foes. The senior forward is averaging a team-best 16.1 points and has scored in double figures in all but one game this season.

San Diego State has played well in recent meetings with the Rams, winning seven in a row and 12 of 13, but trail 35-29 in the series and has dropped 22 of 29 in Fort Collins. The Aztecs snatched both of last year’s meetings, including a 13-point home win over the Rams on March 3.

However, the Aztecs will remember last year’s encounter with Colorado State, as the Rams just about ended their run at a conference tournament title in the quarterfinals, but came up on the losing end of a 72-71 battle.

The Rams would like nothing more than to avenge that loss and challenge for the conference regular-season title themselves, so this game could be a huge statement, as well as punctuating their bid for an invite to the Big Dance.

Colorado will need to put on its best offensive performance if they want to get by the Aztecs stingy defense (59.3 points per game, which is 12th-best in the nation). Meanwhile, the Rams will be no cupcake at home, dropping just two of its previous nine at the Moby. Ogide led the Rams with 13 points in last season’s home loss and 18 in the defeat at SDSU, so if the Rams make a serious challenge, he will be one to keep an eye on in this matchup.
