Why To Bet On Indiana

It’s the third year of the Tom Crean rebuilding project in Bloomington after the program was gutted by the NCAA violations committed by former (disgraced) coach Kelvin Sampson. Crean barely won any games in year one, and his team remained pinned at the bottom of the Big Ten Conference in year two, alongside Penn State. Now, in year three, Indiana is hoping to make a move, and through eight games, the results are reasonably encouraging. No, Indiana’s not about to be an NCAA Tournament team, but the Hoosiers might make the NIT this season.

They’re 7-1 at this point in their campaign, and what really stands out is that they thumped the Evansville Purple Aces, 67-54. Yes, that’s the same Evansville team that went into Indianapolis and stunned the Butler Bulldogs – last year’s national runner-up in the NCAA Tournament – by a 71-68 score.

If Indiana can beat the team that beat Butler on the road, the Hoosiers can compete with Kentucky, even at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

It needs to be said that Kentucky is still a team that’s searching for itself. The Wildcats were counting on Turkish big man Enes Kanter to play for them this season, but when the NCAA ruled Kanter ineligible before the season began, Kentucky’s team took a huge hit.

The Wildcats don’t dominate near the rim and won’t be able to overwhelm opponents on the glass the way they did last season with Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins hammering the boards. Kentucky is a decidedly incomplete team, and all Indiana needs to do is play one really solid game and affirm the Hoosiers’ spectacular 50.5-percent shooting rate.

Why To Bet On Kentucky

The Wildcats are still very athletic and talented. Yes, they don’t have Kanter, but in the form of Terrence Jones – a hugely-hyped recruit who originally committed to the University of Washington but then changed his mind – coach John Calipari has his next great player.

The highly-skilled performers on last season’s Elite Eight team are gone, but Kentucky is now a program that simply reloads instead of rebuilds. Jones is the centerpiece of this year’s team. He has jump-out-of-the-building explosiveness and a fierce scorer’s mentality that comes in handy when his outside jumper isn’t falling.

Jones will continue to attack the rim in any game he plays, and that’s the kind of competitor Indiana doesn’t yet have. Indiana is most definitely rebuilding, but Kentucky has advanced far beyond that point. This game is also being played in Lexington before more than 23,000 enthusiastic Big Blue fans.

That will give Kentucky an extra push, just in case it is needed against Indiana.

How The Game Will Play Out

Indiana is getting better, but Kentucky has played very tough opponents this year and will not be threatened by anything Indiana can do. The Wildcats should pull away from the Hoosiers in the second half with Terrence Jones leading the way. Take Kentucky in this game.
