2013 Underdogs – NCAA Tournamant Upset Picks
It isn’t March Madness unless there are some upsets. Funnily enough this is where the Vegas set is often ahead of the game, making high number seeds the favourite in some situations.All the predictions below are based on seed number upsets not any sort of power rankings.
Hopefully we can play them out to some good earnings.
Round of 64
Missouri over Colorado State – Small one here due to 8/9 seeding. The Rams won’t be ready for Flip Pressey and the Tigers attack. The Tigers won’t melt down the stretch they will show enough spine to threaten the rest of the field.
Iowa State over Notre Dame – Not sure the Cyclones did enough to make it here but I have not been impressed with the Irish this season, especially their guards who don’t make a lot of big plays for them. ISU plays really tough and if they can start strong the Irish may wilt.
Minnesota over UCLA – This is probably going to be a popular pick as UCLA has never really lived up to the hype and is now missing a big piece with Jordan Adams hurt. I see the Hollins Brothers (they are not related) dominating the backcourt matchup and leading to victory.
Bucknell over Butler – Is it possible someone can out-Butler the Bulldogs? The Bison will have the best player on the floor in Mike Muscala and that is a great place to start. All it takes is some decent shooting and toughness.
Round of 32
Iowa State over Ohio State – There is no mystery as to how to beat the Buckeyes. If you can limit DeShaun Thomas’ scoring the ball they usually struggle. They are going to play great defense but if you can make a couple of big shots you are right there. Iowa State is good enough to do that. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
N.C. State over Indiana – Boom I said it. In my mind these teams are equal in terms of talent. In coaching and intensity the advantage shifts big time to IU but if N.C. State plays its best game of the year they will knock out the Hoosiers – and we probably haven’t seen that yet.
VCU over Michigan – The Rams like to make it miserable for opposing guards. If they can get under Trey Burke’s skin the way that Aaron Craft has since the beginning of time beating Big Blue may look much easier than anticipated.
Sweet 16
Michigan State over Duke – Not a huge one here but I think the Spartans will win this one based on superior toughness. They have great counters for for Duke’s inside players and can harass Seth Curry, who might be a little weary at this point of the season.
Florida over Georgetown – Another 3 over a 2 so hardly a shock. Florida was looking so good just a few weeks ago but stumbled down the stretch. Love Billy Donovan, who always gets his team peaking for the tournament and the many options they have. Casey Prather was made to make it difficult for Otto Porter.
Elite 8
Michigan State over Louisville – This game will be physical and intense but don’t expect a lot of scoring. It is only an upset because somebody has to lose. Izzo will outduel Pitino with Adrien Payne building his NBA draft stock in the process by showing you can go at Cardinals eraser Georgui Dieng and succeed.
