Virginia Tech/Florida State looks like one of the hardest ACC games to handicap tonight. It should also be one of the most exciting to watch.
Despite limping into the tourney with two losses, Virginia Tech bounced back to grind out a 16-point win over Georgia Tech. Not surprisingly, the Hokies’ defense came through, holding the Yellow Jackets to a mere 43 points. But offense continues to look problematic for Virginia Tech of late. The Hokies scored less than 65 points for the fourth straight game and fifth time in their last six.
Leading scorer Malcolm Delaney dropped 15 on Georgia Tech – but is it just me or does he need to get the ball more? He attempted just seven shots, making four of them. Meanwhile, Erick Green took 12 shots, making just four. That kind of performance doesn’t bode well against stingy Florida State, which has the nation’s lowest opposing field-goal percentage at 36.5.
The Seminoles kick off their ACC tourney having won five of seven. We can expect their defense to come through and give Virginia Tech some troubles – but who will score for Florida State tonight? The Seminoles won’t have their heart and soul in the lineup. Chris Singleton leads this team in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals. With his foot fractured in several places, he’s long gone.
It’s too bad for FSU; I would’ve liked them to edge Virginia Tech tonight if Singleton was playing. Without him, they won’t be as tough to score on beneath the basket and, more importantly, they’ll have trouble scoring. Florida State will dress only one guy averaging double figures tonight. Virginia Tech – and the UNDER – both make sense.
Trends:
VTECH are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 Fri. games.
Under is 7-0-1 in FSU last 8 Fri. games.
Under is 21-6-2 in FSU last 29 neutral site games.
Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 65, Florida State 60
