After getting by N.C. State without much trouble, the Maryland Terrapins get a major step up in competition tonight when they battle the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils in ACC tournament play.
Maryland has to be a little intimidated. Duke has won nine straight meetings with Maryland, beating the Terrapins by double-digit margins in six of those victories. The Terps will hope their balanced offense poses matchup problems for the Blue Devils tonight. Maryland ranks 21st in the nation with 77-plus points per game despite having just two guys averaging double figures in scoring this season.
One of those players is, of course, top scorer Jordan Williams. He delivered in Maryland’s ACC tourney opener against N.C. State, tallying 16 points and 13 rebounds. Even though Maryland spreads the ball around, it needs Williams to be a cut above everyone else and keep playing well if the team really wants to make a run.
Is it just me or has Duke somehow fallen under the radar this season? Maybe people subconsciously wrote them off after Kyrie Irving’s injury? It just feels like Ohio State and Kansas have gotten way more hype. But the Blue Devils have been excellent for most of this year. Their explosive offense ranks 10th in the nation. Nolan has Smith has been a beast, averaging 21.6 points per game, and Kyle Singler has played a fine second fiddle. Even guys like Seth Curry have stepped up with some big scoring efforts.
Still, some bettors are a bit wary about the nine-point spread against Maryland. After all, Duke enters the ACC tourney having lost two of three (to Virginia Tech and North Carolina) and having failed to cover its last three betting spreads.
I’m not too worried. Duke’s recent struggles are a concern for March Madness, sure, but they came against other nationally ranked rivals. Maryland isn’t in that tier. Duke has really pummelled second-tier or worse opponents all season. It’s one eight of 10 – seven times by 10 or more points. So I like the Blue Devils to amp up the offense and cover tonight. Make sure you pick the OVER, too, no matter how high it is.
