The odds for the NCAA Big Dance this season reflect the fact that with a possible NBA lockout a few players that would have been taken high in the draft decided to stay in school.

The Tar Heels have the best odds and with Harrison Barnes coming back UNC will be stacked.

North Carolina +300

Barnes in the main reason the Tar Heels have the best odds and if he would have left school he would have been a top 10 pick. Even if he had left UNC would have been a contender since they return their core of Tyler Zeller, John Henson, Kendall Marshall, and Reggie Bullock and they had a great recruiting class with James McAdoo and PJ Hairston. The Tar Heels were the best rebounding team in the nation last season and they will be great on the boards again.

Kentucky +600

Yeah, the Wildcats lost Brandon Knight to the NBA draft, but Terrence Jones decided to stay in school. The Wildcats will return Deandre Liggins, Doron Lamb, and Darius Miller and they had the best recruiting class with Michael Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, and Marquis Teague 3 of the top 5 recruits in the nation. UK was a very young and athletic team last season and they will be the same this season, but with Jones and a few other key guys coming back they have the experience and they look to improve on last season’s Final 4 appearance.

Ohio State +600

Big 10 Player of the Year Jared Sullinger would have been a lottery pick and he kept his word by staying in school after he said he would all season long. Aaron Craft and Will Buford return and they have a solid incoming class led by possible future star C Amir Williams.

Syracuse +1500

The Orange only lose one player in PF Rick Jackson and they have a great incoming recruiting class. Kris Joseph is back and he led Cuse’ in scoring and was 2nd in rebounding, but the team will need some guys to step up in both departments since the departing Jackson led the team in rebounds and was 2nd in scoring.

Pittsburgh +1500

The Panthers returns Ashton Gibbs who led the squad in scoring and he opted to stay in school even though he likely would have been drafted. Head coach Jamie Dixon decided not to take the Maryland job to stay at Pitt and the Panthers will be a scrappy team again that will be one of the best rebounding teams in the nation.

Duke +1500

Duke will be a whole new team this season since last season’s best 3 players of Kyrie Irving, Nolan Smith, and Kyle Singler all gone. Irving decided to come out after only one season, but probably not a bad call since he will likely be the top pick in the NBA draft. Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins return and they have big shoes to fill and they will have to step up. However, they will get help from star recruits Austin Rivers, Quinn Cook, Michael Gbinije. Look for a breakout season from Miles Plumlee.

Louisville +1500

The Cardinals were overachievers last season and they only lose one senior in Preston Knowles, who led the team in scoring. Leading rebounder Rakeem Buckles returns and he will be counted on for more offense this season. Louisville is brining in a loaded recruiting class with Wayne Blackshear, Zach Price and Chane Behanan and the young guys will have to step up right away.

Sleepers

Want a couple of sleepers? Well, how about Memphis (+3000) and Xavier (+5000)?

Memphis had one of the best recruiting classes last season and, unlike the last few seasons, nobody from the team jumped ship to the NBA. They also landed one of the best recruits in the nation in Adonis Thomas. The young guys jelled at the end of last season winning the Conference USA tournament and now that they know how to play together the Tigers will be dangerous.

Xavier returns Tu Holloway, who decided to take his name out of the draft and head coach Chris Mack also decided to stay put. Holloway and fellow G Mark Lyons combined to average more than 33 points last season and this season they may be the best backcourt in the nation.

Here are the odds for the top 20 teams to win the NCAA title at Diamond Sportsbook as of May 19th.
