NCAA Basketball Season Preview: Wisconsin (Big Ten Conference)
Wisconsin Odds to Win National Title from Sportsbook.com: +7,500

It seems every year the Wisconsin Badgers aren’t given much of a chance to compete in the Big Ten, but Bo Ryan and his team always seem to be in the thick of the race. The Badgers defense and their physical style of play tend to help them stay in the game, even if their offense isn’t clicking. While many experts will likely point to Wisconsin as a team that may disappoint and struggle to make the NCAA Tournament, I’m counting on this team being successful again this year.

Last year’s team finished the year at 24-9, but they lost to Cornell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team was disappointed with the way last year ended, and they are looking to advance deeper this season. Remember last year the Badgers were held back by their star player, Jon Leuer, having a wrist injury. Leuer is healthy and ready to go this year and that will be a huge key as the season moves along.

Additions

In general, Bo Ryan is not a coach who uses his freshman too often. Since they only have six returning players from last year, he will need to plug in some new guys this season. Ben Brust and Josh Gasser are the two freshmen who are most likely to contribute to this year’s squad. Gasser is a skilled point guard who will eventually be a star for Wisconsin, but it remains to be seen how much he’ll be used in his first year.

Subtractions

The two biggest subtractions from last year’s team are Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon. Bohannon was the Badgers best shooter and helped beat the zone defense last year. Hughes started at point guard and was very adept and driving the line and kicking it out to the open man. The negative here is that both of their losses come in the backcourt, so they’ll need some new guys to help out in this area.

Key Players

John Leuer- Leuer has shown so much ability that he is on the Wooden Award Top 50 list in the preseason. He has great post moves and he has a soft shooting touch from just about anywhere on the floor. Leuer and his 6’10 frame will be extremely tough to defend this year.

Jordan Taylor- Taylor was able to show how much ability he had last year when Leuer was injured, but now the two get to play together. If Taylor can improve his accuracy from behind the arc he will be extremely dangerous.

Surprising Stat- Bo Ryan now has the best winning percentage all-time of any coach in Big Ten Conference play. Ryan is 107-43 (71.3%), which is slightly better than second place Bob Knight, who won 70% of his Big Ten games.

Strengths

The skilled big men on this team will help them create mismatches all year long. This team has the size and physicality to perform well on the glass. Ryan has plenty of players who buy into his system.

Weaknesses

The point guard spot could be a problem this year. They don’t need a scorer at the point guard spot, but they need someone to take care of the basketball. The team lacks the athleticism of other elite schools, which could be a problem at times.

Postseason

Wisconsin will play solid fundamental basketball like they always do and make it into the NCAA Tournament again this year. Leuer should have a huge year for the Badgers, and I expect this team to make it to the second round in March once again.

I always find it both amusing and annoying for the most non athletic individuals to provide opinion on athleticism. Last time I saw the Badgers, they have at least one very capable guard, I think he’s one of their upper classguys. flying in the air and lack of control doesnt equal winning games.
