NCAA Basketball Season Preview:  Kansas State (Big 12)

Odds To Win National Title: +2000

Kansas State had a superb season last year.  Led by a fabulous backcourt of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente they were a force in the Big 12 and had a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.  They proved that there was life after Michael Beasley and Bill Walker and have a lot of important pieces returning to see if they can rekindle the magic.

There is great optimism again in Manhattan because with Pullen back they may have the best clutch shooter in the nation.  Returning forwards Curtis Kelly, Jamar Samuels and Wally Judge all have room to grow giving the Wildcats one of the deepest frontcourts around.  This is a bit of a down year in the conference so the Wildcats might be able to usurp the title from their in-state neighbors the Jayhawks.

If everything goes to plan this team might cut down some nets this season.

Additions

Nino Williams – A gifted wing player who the program wasn’t expecting until next year arrived early.  Shane Southwell – He might be their new point guard which would create matchup problems for the opposition because he is 6’6″ and strong.

Subtractions

Denis Clemente – Pullen’s running mate, this heady guard will be dearly missed.  Dominique Sutton – Athletic wing was critical to strong defensive effort of team. Luis Colon – A big who struggled with health but always used his size and fouls well.

Key Players

Jacob Pullen – One of the best guards in the country, can score and is not afraid of taking the big shots, Curtis Kelly – Keeps improving and could average a double-double in his senior season,  Wally Judge – Highly touted frosh didn’t live up to expectations last year.  He has the highest ceiling of anyone on the team, including Pullen.

Surprising Stat

To succeed in the Big 12 you have to be able to put the ball in the basket.  K-State was 11th in the nation in scoring at 79.7 ppg, but that was only good for third in the conference.

Strengths

The key strengths for the Wildcats are a long athletic frontcourt and the shot making presence of Jacob Pullen.  The Big 12 is going to be a tight conference where the last few possessions of each game will matter.  Pullen provides huge amounts of confidence to coach Frank Martin and the rest of the team.

Weaknesses

Replacing a senior PG like Clemente is going to be tough.  Not only did they get good production out of him but he took some pressure off Pullen.  They need to find someone who can run the team effectively and be a defensive presence so the rest of the guys can do their thing.

Championship Odds: +2500

Post Season: Anything less than the Sweet Sixteen will be a disappointment.  How much magic did they use up last year?

Projected wins: 27-30
