NCAA Basketball – Baylor Preview

Key players added – Perry Jones, Bakari Turner, Stargell Love, J’Mission Morgan
Key players lost – LaceDarius Dunn (maybe), Ekpe Udoh, Tweety Carter

Baylor had high hopes coming into this season, but things started off on the wrong foot, big time, when one of nation’s best scorers LaceDarius Dunn was accused of aggravated assault on his girlfriend and was suspended from the team as well as classes. Since he is not going to class it will be hard for him to remain eligible even if the team reinstates him.

Dunn averaged 19.6 ppg last season and before he was suspended a Big 12 coaches poll had Baylor picked 4th, but without their senior leading scorer that high of a finish is unlikely. If Dunn does not come back the Bears will have to rely more on some solid incoming freshman.

Baylor’s big freshman is C Perry Jones, who is a legit top 10 recruiting prospect and he is a good inside player that was a great addition by head coach Scott Drew. Jones will fill the void inside left by Ekpe Udoh, who was a shot blocking forward that did not come back for his senior season and was the 6th pick in the NBA draft. Jones will be joined in the middle from UCLA transfer C J’Mission Morgan, who got little playing time for the Bruins last season, but is another big body in the paint. Jones is a projected NBA lottery pick if his skills progress, as that is the kind of talent he has.

Freshman G Bakari Turner is the player that may really have to step up to replace Dunn. Turner is a scoring guard that can bomb away from long range and he will have to fill it up in his first season on the Bears for them to repeat their success from last season. The loss of PG Tweety Carter (15 ppg 6 assists per game last season) will hurt and freshman Stargell Love will be the favorite to come in and start at the position. He may be key this season taking over for Carter, who was one of the best PG’s in the Big 12 last season.

The veteran trio of Quincy Acy, Fred Ellis, Cory Jefferson and Anthony Jones will man the forward position. Acy averaged 9.3 ppg last season and he will be looked upon for more scoring and rebounding this season. He was the 6th man for the Bears this season and will likely be a starter this time around.

Even if Dunn comes back the returning players and the incoming freshman will have to step it off on offense, as with the loss of Carter and Udoh they lost 28.9 ppg. Udoh was the team’s leading rebounder and shot-blacker and Jones and Acy will have to hit the boards hard this season.

The big issue for the Bears is obviously Dunn and if he will be reinstated. His girlfriend, who he allegedly assaulted, did not want to file charges against him, but that is up to the courts and that issue is still not resolved. If Dunn cannot play it means Baylor will be without their 3 leading scorers from last season and that may be too tough to overcome. They have some talent coming in and they may still compete for a spot in the Big Dance, but it will be a tough road to hoe.

Surprising stat: Last season Baylor won a school record 28 games.
Strengths: Youth and talent. Jones and Turner are highly regarded prospects that have to produce right away.
Weaknesses: Scoring and inexperience. The Bears really need Dunn to come back not only for his scoring, but for his veteran presence as well.
Big Dance? With Dunn yes, without him maybe.

Baylor Win total prediction for 2010-11

Again, I know I am beating a dead horse, but Dunn is key. If he can return the Bears should win at least 25 games, but if he is lost for the season I see Baylor winning somewhere around 20 games.
