2009/2010 Season Preview: Villanova Wildcats Predictions (Big East)

  • Bodog.com Betting Odds – Villanova Odds To Win 2009/10 National Championship – 12/1

Last year, the Big East was the best in the land and Villanova was one of a group of teams that helped to earn that distinction. This year they are the elite conference team that has suffered the fewest talent losses, vaulting them to the top of preseason conference and national rankings. They do this as a result of continued excellence in the backcourt, a staple of their play since coach Jay Wright took over.

That excellence comes in the form of Scottie Reynolds, Corey Stokes, Corey Fisher and some dynamic freshmen. These guys are tough, savvy and make big plays all the time. Big shots as well as big stops. Reynolds seems like he has been around forever and the two Corey’s have proven to be great running mates. They are all unselfish and will teach touted frosh Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek all about Big East play.

To have a chance in what is usually the most rugged conference in the land they will have to get solid play up front to complement their bevy of riches in the backcourt. Rebounding and defense will be all that is demanded though which should make it easier for a couple of young bigs. If they can compete hard against the likes of Greg Monroe and Luke Harangody then this team will live up to its promise. If they can’t get it done this team will be dangerous but inconsistent.

If you believe that guard play is the key to winning then these ‘Cats will be awfully tough to beat.

Surprising Stat – Last year they basically didn’t play a player over 6’8″ yet still out-rebounded opponents by 4.9 RBG. They are great road play 8-3 SU last year…not bad considering the level of competition.

Strengths – Michigan state is very good but for my money I will take the Villanova backcourt over any other in country. They can score and protect the basket and have proven time and again that they are willing to pay the price to win. Reynolds has some great running mates that continue to get better. The other strength they have is that they really play within and understand their system. They spread the floor to create lanes and everybody rebounds. They have great leadership and stay within themselves.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Weaknesses – In case you haven’t notices they do not have a lot of size. Against teams that play big they can struggle especially if their few bigs struggle with fouls and they have to go deep into their bench. Primarily a shooting team they can shoot themselves in and out of ball games.

Post Season – I see another nice run this year. If I had to pick a final four now they would be in it. You can’t beat that backcourt and its deep.

Additions

Maalik Wayns – a highly touted PG who will help continue the legacy.
Dominic Cheek – another 1st year guard who will have to help hit the boards at 6’6″.
Mouphtaou Yarou – If he is good early then this team will enter Big East play unblemished.
Isaiah Armwood – Skin and bones frosh adds some height if not bulk at 6’8″.

Subtractions

Dante Cunningham – Leading scorer and best rebounder, a great team player too.
Shane Clark – Another physical but undersized frontcourt player. Their second leading rebounder a year ago.

Key Players

Scottie Reynolds – Cool and calm under pressure. Scores and leads equally well.
Corey Fisher – Continuing to develop as PG. Very tough and strong on the ball and on D.
Corey Stokes – Excellent scorer with NBA frame – 6’5″ 220. Could explode this year.
Antonio Pena – A banger who is not afraid of the bigs in conference.

Projected wins

26-28
