2009/2010 Season Preview: Purdue Boilermakers Predictions (Big 10)

  • Bodog.com Betting Odds – Purdue Odds To Win 2009/10 National Championship – 22/1

Purdue has been a bit of an enigma the last couple of years. They have lots of really good talent without a true superstar but they never seem to be able play great in big games. They don’t embarrass themselves but they don’t have that championship level gear…at least they haven’t shown it yet. Will this be the year…maybe.

Across the board there is no team in the conference with a better starting lineup than Purdue. They have athleticism, size, scoring and defense. They should kill a lot more teams than they do. Two years ago it looked like Robbie Hummel was going to be the star but now I think JaJuan Johnson has the higher ceiling. Hummel is still very good and versatile, but he, like the team, seams to lack that killer instinct.

Purdue is one of the most dangerous teams out there because they have a great backcourt too. Keaton Grant and E’Twaun Moore provide offense while Chris Kramer will harass the opposing teams top guard. It is a formula that works well and can carry then deep into the postseason. They don’t necessarily have a distinctive style but they can keep you from playing yours.

Surprising Stat
The Boilermakers were outrebounded (-.6) last year despite their solid size across the board. I see this as a sign of a lack of agressiveness.

A brutally unpredictable team they were below .500 (16-18) against the spread despite winning 27 games. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Strengths
A fantastically good starting lineup with good size and the ability to score inside and out. This team is better than average athletically and can play good defense when motivated. With Kramer they can really get after a top point guard and disrupt the entire team.

Weaknesses
It seems like they should be achieving more with this group which means it may be on the coach. Let’s face it Matt Painter had some success at Southern Illinois but he didn’t build that program, Bruce Weber did. In a league like the Big Ten with Izzo, Weber, Smith, Beilein etc. he might be the weak link…or he is one of those guys who is a better recruiter than coach.

Additions
Kelsey Barrow – Adds athleticism on the wing.
DJ Byrd – A strong 2 guard…May not play much due to the guys ahead of him.
Sandi Marcius – A beefy backup for Johnson will be valued on the midsized team.

Subtractions
Nemanja Calasan – A rotation guy who provided some fire.
Marcus Green – Another guy deep in the rotation who was competent when called upon.

Key Players
Robbie Hummel – The most highly touted of their juniors he does everything well.
JaJuan Johnson – Has improved the most and may be the best big in the conference.
E’Twaun Moore – Has a killer instinct but needs to be more consistent.

Post Season
Duh…I really like their talent and think this team could make the Elite Eight

Projected wins
23-25
