With all due respect to UCLA and Kentucky when it comes to tradition in college basketball my immediate thoughts run to UNC. There were a couple of lean years after legendary coach Dean Smith retired but the Tar Heels have climbed back to elite status with Roy Williams leading the charge. They have lost some key contributors from last year’s championship team but there is no shortage of talent on the roster There will definitely be some new opportunities to shine now that first round picks Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington are no longer on campus.

2009-2010 marks a bit of a changing of the guard at UNC. It seems like Hansbrough has been the face of college basketball for the last decade. For UNC to maintain their high level of performance a talented group of freshmen and sophomores oozing with pro talent will have to come through…and don’t forget glue guy Marcus Ginyard, who is coming off injury and is the rare scrappy, physical hustle player on the roster.

Surprising Stat:

The Tar Heels are all about scoring and pace. They were second in the nation in scoring at 89.8 ppg but were 275th in points allowed at 72ppg. You would think that with their superior length and athleticism they would be better at defending.

Even with all that scoring the oddsmakers have a pretty good handle on UNC they were only 21-16 0/U.

Strengths

Nobody has more size than the Tar Heels with 5 players listed at 6’10” or taller. This is UNC so they aren’t exactly stiffs either. Many rate their frontcourt the best in America and rebounding should not be an issue even with the graduation of Hansbrough.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Weaknesses

Roy Williams wants to play fast which requires quality PG play. Last year this team struggled when Lawson was not in the game and Larry Drew III was erratic. If he becomes solid this team has final four potential. If he is good than they have the chance to win it all. Only other weakness could be toughness. They are relying on young talent to replace the physicality of Hansbrough…will they be willing to punch people in the mouth when it is required.

Post Season

Absolutely…Anything less than a sweet sixteen performance will be a massive disappointment. My gut says elite eight where they get beat by a team with a really strong backcourt who can shoot the rock.

Additions

John Henson – a preseason all ACC candidate as a freshman, Leslie McDonald – Will have to replace Ellington’s shooting,  David Wear – 6′ 10 brothers add size and skill,  Travis Wear – nobody has more size than UNC,   Dexter Strickland – possible PG

Subtractions

Tyler Hansbrough (#1DC),  Ty Lawson (#1DC), Wayne Ellington (#1DC),  Danny Green (#2DC), Bobby Frasor

Key Players

Ed Davis – Some think he will be a lottery pick if he comes out next spring.

Tyler Zeller – Ditto for this 7 footer who will have an expanded role this year.
