2009 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship Prediction

Way back on March 15th when the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament brackets were first unveiled, I would think that most people, myself included penciled in or mouse clicked the name North Carolina all the way to the final. My question is how many people out there had the mental fortitude to do the same with the name, Michigan State? My guess is not nearly as many, myself included. But here we are 63 games later and that is our championship matchup.

Here is my prediction for The Championship Final both even up and against the spread (ATS)

Michigan State Spartans vs. North Carolina Tar Heels -7 ½

Feeding off the energy of the home town crowd at Ford Field, Michigan State jumped on Connecticut early and never let up.  The Huskies battled back and pulled within 3 with less than a minute to go, but Durrell Summers’ 3 point play sealed the win. The Spartans relied on speed and quickness to wear down a bigger and stronger UConn team, who seemed to run out of gas down the stretch. It was an impressive win for the Big Ten Champion as they were able to play their best ball when they needed it the most.

If there were any doubt how good North Carolina really is, that was completely erased when they soundly thrashed an outmatched Villanova Wildcat team in the other semifinal game. The Tar Heels came out hitting 3’s from everywhere and never looked back. ‘Nova looked completely out of sync and never recovered from an early double digit deficit. Ty Lawson led the way with 22 points along with seven rebounds and eight assists. Wayne Ellington added 20 points and nine rebounds to the effort, as North Carolina dominated early and often in this one, winning their fifth straight tournament game by double digits.

North Carolina now faces Michigan State on Monday night in the title game. These two teams met earlier this season with the Tar Heels coming out on top 98-63. While I do not expect this game to be as lopsided, Michigan State is facing a steep uphill challenge to try and pull off one more upset. They will have the home field advantage which certainly will be a factor, but North Carolina is just too complete a team to let anything keep them from winning their 5th National Championship in school history.

2009 NCAAB CHAMPIONSHIP PREDICTION

The Tar Heels win this one in the same fashion as the last 5, by double figures beating Michigan State by 12.
