2009/2010 Season Preview: Kentucky Wildcats Predictions (SEC)

Imagine if Rick Pitino never left Kentucky. Is there any doubt they would have been the leading team in college basketball over the last decade plus?. He had the team dripping with talent. Tubby maintained it for a while before things really fell of. In my opinion this is the best gig in the land and now they have given it to John Calipari.

Coach Cal can certainly recruit grabbing the best PG and big available in John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins. Combine them with the beast that is Patrick Patterson and a team that failed to gel under Billy Gillespie is now a popular Final Four candidate. They should have enough talent to do it but I think it might be asking too much of a new coach relying on so many highly touted yet untested players. Best in the conference might be a good consolation.

I am curious to see how this team comes together. They have talent but will they be able to play Cal’s high tempo system. The dribble drive motion system relies on having reliable jump shooters making three’s and spreading out the floor. The Wildcats don’t have the shooters that Memphis has had over the last few years. If Jodie Meeks had come back he would have helped a lot. Instead he got drafted 41st by Milwaukee. I think he got some bad advice which is too bad because having him back would have made this collection of talent awesome.

Surprising Stat
Horrible at turning the ball over last year at 16.9 per game (315th)…Wall better be the answer. Cal has got to get the team rocking at home…they were only 6-8 ATS at home. I expect that to improve.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

TALENT…There are so many expectations based on the talent on the roster. Cal can coach so I expect him to get a lot out of this group even though he may need to rebuild the team next year after many go pro. The team should be exciting to watch playing an up-tempo style.

TALENT…Other than Patterson little of it is proven. They need to get out fast or else people will pick at their faults. This is Kentucky basketball not Wisconsin. With so many new players it is hard to know where the weaknesses will reside. Most likely inconsistency.

John Wall – Consensus top PG recruit. If he is Derrick Rose good, this team will be too.
DeMarcus Cousins – Working with Patterson makes for an imposing front line.
Eric Bledsoe – Excellent athlete who will likely start as well.
Daniel Orton – On any other team his arrival would have been more highly anticipated. A big with beef and skill

Jodie Meeks – Last year’s leading scorer will be missed. Bad decision to turn pro early
Michael Porter – Meeks’ backup…not so much.

Key Players
Patrick Patterson – A classic power forward who score rebounds and knows how to use his size.
John Wall – Everyone is expecting a lot and quickly. He does not have much margin for error.
DeMarcus Cousins – Because of the presence of Patterson there is not as much pressure on him…Orton’s presence also helps. He is supposed to be awesome by the way.

Post Season
Back in the NCAA for sure but I think they are not quite at the elite level year. A couple of wins might be just enough to entice some players to come back…maybe
