In the late 2000s the Memphis Grizzlies pretty much established themselves. They were so dogcrap bad that there was a permanent seat for them at the Draft Lottery. They were ridiculed for the trade of Pau Gasol to the Lakers. Over a three-season span they won a combined total of 68 games. Bad, bad, bad.

But by sticking to the plan the Grizz have become the poor-man’s version of the Oklahoma City Thunder – young, athletic and raing to go on just about any night. Monday night’s win over the Thunder gave the Grizz three wins in the last four, five of the last seven and nine of the last 12. Heading into tonight’s game against the Knicks, the 36-29 Grizz look better than ever to make the playoffs despite a brutal schedule (New York twice, Boston, Miami, Chicago and San Antonio) over the next three weeks. The key to the resurgence could be forward Zach Randolph, who is leading the team in scoring and gives Memphis a decent inside presence to go along with Marc Gasol. Rudy Gay and Mike Conley can run the floor with anyone, and if O.J. Mayo can ever figure out the NBA game, the Grizz will have as good a starting five as anyone. Figuring to strike while the iron is hot, a few weeks ago the Grizz gave up on high draft pick Hasheem Thabeet and traded him for Houston forward Shane Battier.

Memphis averages 35 points a game out of its bench, although lately coach Lionel Hollins has shown signs that he is tightening the rotation and giving more minutes to starters as they enter the stretch run. The Grizz will be keeping a close eye on New Orleans, Phoenix, Utah and Houston in what should be a wild five-team sprint for the final few playoff spots in the Western Conference.

NBA Trends:

NY are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 road games.
Under is 10-4 in NY last 14 road games.
MEM are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Wed. games.
MEM are 36-16 ATS in their last 52 games overall.
Road team is 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.

Pick: Back to back nights are tough. I like a small play on the Knicks possibly even a moneyline play.
