NBA Betting – Wednesday Night Picks

It wasn’t too long ago that the Hawks’ once-a-year trip to south Texas would be as predictable as heat in July. Athleticism enabled the Hawks to hang with the Spurs for a quarter or a half, but in the end Atlanta’s defense would tire of defending the pick-and-roll, and the Spurs would fundamental the kids to death and pick up an easy W.

Hawks vs. Spurs

Time: Wednesday 8:30 ET
Venue: AT&T Center, San Antonio
Spread: Spurs -3.5
Over/Under: 195 (-110)

Not so much now. The Hawks now have the enviable combination of experience and relatively young legs, they actually are over .500 on the road (11-9) and if they can maintain their equilibrium during a tough 4-game, 7-day stretch (at San Antonio, Boston at home, then at Orlando and at Oklahoma City), they will deserve a place at the dinner table along with the elites of the league.

After doing all the wrong things for a decade, the Hawks’ front office is on a bit of a roll. Bringing in PG Mike Bibby to stabilize things has been a major factor in settling down an offense that only a few years ago was characterized by dunks and turnovers. Joe Johnson (21 ppg) is a solid scorer who can go off at any time, and Jamal Crawford (17.3 ppg in 30 minutes per game) gives the Hawks a terrific late-game offensive option.

The 25-18 Spurs, meanwhile, are all about the playoffs, and nothing much matters between now and April except keeping the core (Duncan, Jefferson, Ginobili, Parker) healthy for another spring run. This time last season SA was in the midst of an 11-2 run, but having home court edge in the first round of the playoffs was useless as they lost to the Mavs in a surpringly lopsided 5-game best-of-seven series. For veteran teams like the Spurs (and Celtics, Suns and Nuggets), monitoring minutes now and heading into the playoffs with all hands of deck is the key to survival.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

BEST BET: Lots of evidence for this one going Atlanta’s way – the Hawks are 6-1 ATS when they have a day’s rest, they are a good cover team (7-2-1 in the last 10) as an underdog, and they’re 7-2 in the last 9 as a road dog. The Spurs, meanwhile, are 2-5 ATS in the last 7 playing on one day’s rest, and are an anemic 6-18 against the number vs. teams with records above .600. Atlanta should be energized by Monday’s win over Houston in which the Hawks put up 102. SA’s Tim Duncan had only 5 rebounds in 33 minutes in a loss to the Bulls on Monday, and the Spurs have now lost 3 in a row at home.
