Last season the Celtics headed into the playoffs with a bad seeding (4) but healthy, and got to the NBA Finals.
This season they may have the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but no one knows what kind of physical shape the team will be in when the playoffs get under way in less than a month. Shaquille O’Neal is hurt, Delonte West is hurt, Jermaine O’Neil hasn’t been spotted since before Christmas, Glen Davis is out. Deadlines for return come and go, and then someone else gets hurt.
Through it all, the Celtics’ veterans play through, piling up three-, four- and five-game winning streaks regularly. They can probably both trim minutes for the starters and keep the No. 1 seed because with just 21 games remaining they hold a solid three-game loss-column lead over the Chicago Bulls. Boston and Chicago have separated themselves from the pack and appear destined for another classic playoff series.
So confident are the Celtics right now that they are replicating the business model of the old Bird-McHale-Parish Celtics: Keep things close for three periods, then hit the accelerator hard in the fourth quarter. It worked to perfection in Milwaukee against a flawed Bucks team last weekend.
Boston’s flurry of deals at the trading deadline served the two-fold purpose of adding depth (Nenad Kristic has been solid at center and Jeff Green gives the Celtics someone to spell Paul Pierce and adding building blocks for the future. But with Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen still at the top of their games, that future might be a little further away than we all thought.

Keeping the big guns fresh for the playoffs will determine whether Boston can make yet another deep post-season run.
