Mike Woodson lost his job after last season when the Hawks flat-out gave up in the second round of the playoffs against the Magic, losing four straight by margins of 43, 14, 30 and 14. After winning 53 games in the regular season and beating the upstart Bucks in the first round of the playoffs, management figured the Hawks would at least put up a fight against Orlando.

Instead, they turtled, Woodson was fired and new coach Larry Drew promised an end to the isolation offense the players loved and the introduction of a motion offense that featured less individual play.

Drew’s changes have produced mixed results. Atlanta is a little better defensively (7th overall, as opposed to 10th last season) but offensively has fallen all the way from 13th to 25th.

You would figure that the Hawks would be better in the second half of the season as they become familiar with the offense, but the opposite has occurred – before back-to-back home wins over Portland and Milwaukee this week, the Hawks had dropped 10 of their last 14. With 15 games left they now have only a puncher’s chances of catching Orlando for the No. 4 playoff seed in the East and home-court edge in the first round, probably against the Magic.

Part of the Hawks’ offensive problems are due to backcourt instability. Mike Bibby’s deteriorating skills forced Atlanta to let him go, and Kirk Hinrich was acquired to run the offense. When that didn’t work, Hinrich was moved to the 2 and Jeff Teague finally got his chance to run the team.

Teague responded with the game of his career against the Trail Blazers (25 points, 5 steals, 3 assists), but then was mediocre against the Bucks in the next game.

NBA Trends:

DEN are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
Under is 6-2-1 in DEN last 9 vs. NBA Southeast.
DEN are 23-8-1 ATS in their last 32 Wed. games.
Under is 11-4 in ATL last 15 overall.
Favorite is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Atlanta.

BEST BET: Fans rolled their eyes when George Karl said his Nuggets are a better team without Carmelo Anthony. Now they believe him. The Nuggets are 8-2 SU and 9-1 ATS since the Anthony trade, and playing with great intensity.

Liking Denver +1 over the schizophrenic Hawks tonight.
