IN THE NIGHTCAP, both New York and Dallas will have playoff seeding on their minds as they head down the stretch.
The Knicks have three wins in a row and at 34-29 they have an outside chance at catching Atlanta for the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, but NY would probably have to go 13-5 or 14-4 from here on in to get that done. A 6 seed in more likely, and that might match up the Knicks against the Heat in a Superstar Series (Wade, James, Stoudemire and Anthony).
New York comes in the Dallas game with some momentum after knocking off, in order, Atlanta, Utah and Memphis. Anthony, meanwhile, has been as advertised. He’s averaging 26.4 points for the Knicks, rebounding a bit, playing OK defense and along with Stoudemire giving the team the 1-2 punch that the team feels can carry the franchise for the next five years.
Every game is important for the Mavericks as they go belly button to the wall in an effort to win as many regular season games as possible and get home court in a Western Conference playoffs that figure to be wide open, but coach Rick Carlisle is scratching his head after Dallas allowed New Orleans (without Chris Paul) to score 8 points in the final minutes and come away with a one-point win last night.
The Mavs’ problem is on the boards. They have lost two of three, and in those two losses have been outrebounded by an 86-68 margin. That doesn’t get it done unless the offense can shoot above 50 percent.
