CELTICS vs. MAGIC
Time: Thursday 8 ET
Venue: Quicken Amway Arena, Orlando
Spread: Magic -3.5
Over/Under: 187.5
The Boston Celtics look like a tired, old and – most importantly – bored team as they struggle to get players healthy for the playoffs which are still 86 days away. Kevin Garnett still has the instensity but not the leg strength. Paul Pierce can still shoot but rarely shows the explosiveness that has made him one of the franchise’s top scorers. Ray Allen can’t come off picks quickly enough to get open looks.
Since the Celtics can’t win with their B game anymore, they need one of the Big Three to step up, plus get creativity from PG Rajon Rondo and tough inside play from C Kendrick Perkins. But the NBA isn’t planning to shorten the games from 48 to 36 minutes any time soon, so the Celtics will struggle to put away even average teams, like they did Monday at home against a Clippers club that was in the middle of a long road trip and had played the night before.
On Thursday night the Celtics travel to Orlando, which has its own issues. The Magic have fallen behind the full-speed-ahead Hawks in the Southeast and are having trouble beating teams with winning records. Any team that can lose consecutive games to Washington, Toronto, Chicago and Indiana (combined 74-103) has problems, and the Magic just don’t seem to have the belly fire that got them to The Finals last season. Vince Carter has supplied points but not much else.
MAVERICKS vs. SUNS
Time: Thursday 10:30 ET
Venue: US Airways Center, Phoenix
Spread: Suns -2
Over/Under: 216.5
Speaking of wearing down, the Suns seem to have lost complete interest in playing without the ball. Charlotte, one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league, took down the Suns in overtime Tuesday night and put 114 on the board.
It doesn’t help that the Mavericks, the best road team (16-8) in the Western Conference, come to town.
Making matters worse for Phoenix, Grant Hill has a bruised heel and Amare Stoudemire has been the subject of about a dozen trade rumors.
BEST PARLAY BET: Boston-Orlando is hard to read as neither team seems too concerned about what’s happening the regular season. Perkins always seems to give Dwight Howard trouble, even in Orlando, and Boston did win there earlier this season. But the Celtics have too many warts right now and are a good fade option. In Game 2 Dallas seems a lock, but one odd stat sticks out: In their last 26 Thursday games, the Mavs are 5-21. God knows why. After a fast start, Phoenix has trended under in home games over the last month. Orlando -3.5 in Game 1, the under in Game 2.

One reply on “NBA Picks: Thursday Night Parlay (Jan. 28)”
Both Boston and Orlando look out of sorts lately as the gap between them and Cleveland is getting wider by the week. If I had to pick tonights game I would go with the Magic simply because they are playing at home.
After making a bit of a run, the Suns have hit the skids while the Mavericks are for the most part playing consistent ball. I’ll go with Dallas in the other half of this pick.
