LAKERS vs. HEAT

Spread: Lakers -4
Over/Under: 188.5

You pretty much know what you get when the Lakers come to town. Forget home court advantage. Kobe Bryant will get the calls he needs if the game is close, and if it comes down to LA needing a hoop in the final minute…well, you know the rest. That’s what’s facing the Heat tonight when they take on the Lakers, who are embarking on a swing of the Southeast (Charlotte and Orlando are next up).

This is basically fish-or-cut-bait time for the Heat. A 4-game losing streak that included home losses to Minnesota and Milwaukee means that the underachieving Heat will have to burn every ounce of energy down the stretch to hold off Charlotte for the final playoff spot in the East. Their down-to-the-wire victory over road-hopeless Golden State on Tuesday showed how difficult the final month of the season will be.

Michael Beasley has been able to stay on the court this year after an off-season of personal struggles, but too often has been content to be just another guy. The Heat need more from the former overall No. 2 pick in the draft. Beasley’s disappearing act has made it nearly impossible for the Heat to win without Dwyane Wade dominating. With Wade the Heat are a little better than .500.

Without him they become the 76ers. Wade leaving via free agency this summer becomes more and more likely with each loss.

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:

This is a nasty matchup for the Heat, home or road. Jermaine O’Neal can go into a shell when things go bad, and the Heat’s front line can’t come close to matching the Lakers’. Bryant is well-rested, having played only 30 minutes in a rout of Indiana on Tuesday. If you play the totals, 188.5 looks about a few 3-pointers shy for two teams that come into this game rested. The Suns look like they’re getting their second wind after a mid-season sag, and they’ve covered the number 7 straight times. As they say, never bet on a streak to end.
