NBA Thursday Night Preview

It’s a light NBA betting schedule on Thursday night with only two games on tap. At least both games are solid matchups between Western Conference teams in the playoff picture, as Phoenix takes on Dallas and San Antonio faces Denver.

The Suns should be glad to be heading out on the road again. Phoenix has been much better away from US Airways Center this season with a 7-2 road record, compared to a 4-5 mark at home. Heading into their game against the Hornets on Wednesday night Phoenix was on a short two-game losing streak after falling to New Jersey 117-109 as an 8.5-point favorite on the NBA odds on Sunday. The Suns had no answer for Devin Harris and his 47-point outburst, while Steve Nash led Phoenix with 26 points and nine assists.

The Mavericks have really turned things around lately after their lousy 2-7 start to the season. Dallas has won seven of their last eight games to climb over .500 and they actually have a shot at taking over first place in the Southwest this weekend if Houston or New Orleans stumbles. The Mavs’ latest win came on Sunday after they edged the Clippers 100-98 as an 11-point favorite on the NBA odds.

In three meetings last season Dallas was 2-1 versus Phoenix.

The Spurs and Nuggets collide on Thursday night heading in opposite directions. San Antonio has lost their last two games, while Denver has posted three straight wins to move into a tie for first place in the Northwest.

The Spurs lost badly to Detroit 89-77 on Tuesday as a 5.5-point favorite. Tim Duncan led San Antonio with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Manu Ginobili made his first start of the season but could only muster 13 points. As a team the Spurs shot a paltry 39 percent from the floor and were outscored 28-14 in the decisive fourth quarter.

Denver completely dominated Toronto in a 132-93 blowout victory as a 5-point favorite on Tuesday night. Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony were an unstoppable duo in the win, as Billups logged 24 points and 14 assists, while Anthony poured in 23 points.

The Nuggets faced an injury-plagued Spurs squad that was missing both Ginobili and Tony Parker in mid-November when they won 91-81 as a 1-point road favorite. Billups had 22 points and Anthony scored 21 points for Denver, while Duncan was limited to 12 points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio in the loss. The Spurs should be able to put up a better fight with Parker and Ginobili in the lineup, but they’ll still be an underdog to a Nuggets squad that has won seven of their last eight games at home.
