Matchup: HEAT vs. SPURS

Time: Thursday 7 ET
Venue: AT&T Center, San Antonio
Spread: Spurs -8
Over/Under: 194.5

Are the good old times back for the San Antonio Spurs, or are the Spurs just a bunch of old guys taking advantage of bad teams?

You can play only the games on the schedule, and the Spurs now have three straight wins, 6 of 7 and 9 of 11 against the soft underbelly of the league heading into the New Year’s Eve battle against Miami. It’s be a rare game vs. a quality opponent for San Antonio (18-11), which has made a solid move in the Western Conference by beating up on inferior competition. In fact, the Spurs haven’t beaten a plus-.500 team since Nov. 27 (Houston), and have 5 straight losses against decent teams.

A run of games against the Minnesotas, New Yorks, Milwaukees, Clippers, Charlottes and Sacramentos has enabled the Spurs to get their swagger back, even if down deep in their hearts they know that winning the championship for the 5th time might be a little out of their reach.

As the Spurs battle it out with Dallas and Houston in the Southwest Conference, a key factor will be the health of guard Manu Ginobili, and Ginobili appeared just fine in a massacre of the befuddled Timberwolves earlier this week – 14 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists and 3 steals.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Ginolbili, who may be the best European to ever play in the NBA, turns 32 this coming summer and some bloggers in Texas are advocating a trade while he still has some game. They are not, however, pushing to deal Tim Duncan. The Big Fundamental will turn 33 during the first round of the playoffs, and has shown no signs that he will not be able to give you 20-10 games well into the next decade.

Miami (16-12) comes in on a run of its own, winning SU as well as ATS in 5 of the last 6. The Heat are playing a bit under the radar as the big story in the Southeast Division is the emergence of the Hawks as a challenger to the Celtics-Cavaliers-Magic Eastern Conference triumverate.

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:

Miami is one of the rare average to above-average teams that doesn’t mail it in in the second game of back-to-backs (Heat lost Wednesday night in New Orleans and have a legit shot at covering 8 against the Spurs, who haven’t played a half-decent team in more than a week. The Clippers have a history of folding up shop in the fourth quarter when they’re down double digits, but the 76ers are playing their second-to-last game on a long road trip and it’s about time for their legs to give out. Heat +8 and Clippers -2 for the play.
