CAVALIERS vs. CELTICS

Time: Thursday 8 ET
Venue: TD Garden, Boston
Spread: Cavaliers -2.5
Over/Under: 193

That victory against New Orleans on Tuesday night settled everyone’s nerves in Cleveland, but the Cavs go into the home of TNT’s weekly doubleheader with three losses and zero covers in their last four. And the Celtics haven’t been all that bad since the All-Star break, righting their own ship with four wins in their last five.

The thumb injury that Paul Pierce suffered in the Celtics’ win over the Lakers in Los Angeles last week has made him a game-time decision for tonight, and Boston coach Doc Rivers usually errs on the side of caution. Chasing LeBron James around for 35 minutes isn’t likely to help Pierce, especially since Pierce also reported flu-like symptoms.

Losses to Denver, Charlotte and Orlando got everyone thinking that Boston, Orlando or Atlanta might give the Cavs a run for the best record in the East, but that ain’t gonna happen, and Cleveland’s only real battle for the best record in the league (and home-court edge in every playoff series) is coming from the Lakers.

Antawn Jamison seems to have found his sea legs in Cleveland after that miserable first game – he’s has 19 and 18 in subsequent games and has given the Cavs more size and quickness.

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:

Boston and Cleveland have met only once this season (opening night). The Celtics won, but that was an eternity ago and means nothing. They’ll face off three times in the next 5 weeks in a look ahead at a possible Eastern Conference finals. The over looks like a good play at 193, especially if Pierce is a no-go. Boston also will give more minutes to newcomer Nate Robinson, who plays little defense and pushes the ball. The Warriors consistently score in triple figures against mediocre opponents, but struggle against any team that plays a bit of defense.

Either the under or Denver laying the 5.5 (admittedly a big number on the road) is the play here.
