Not only had the Blazers lost three games in a row, they had dropped seven straight games against the number but got off a “schneid” of sorts on Tuesday night. They overwhelmed the Sacramento Kings with a 109-77 romp, led by Brandon Roy’s 29 points which included 15-for-15 from the free throw line. But the Blazers really did the job on the defensive end, holding Sacramento to less than 32% shooting and grabbing 59 rebounds.

Roy has been red-hot for the team, averaging 32.5 points over his last four. Greg Oden pulled down 15 rebounds against the Clippers last Friday and followed that with ten more boards against the Kings on Tuesday. With eight points a game, he’s yet to give them a real offensive boost but with an ensemble of talented scorers, maybe they don’t need that.

Phoenix got off to an eleven-point first-quarter lead against the Knicks the other night, and won by eight (111-103). All five starters were in double figures, including Shaquille O’Neal, who had 23 points to go with 12 rebounds. Shaq is 58% from the line, which is a nice little surprise. The Suns shot a shade under 45% from the field against Mike D’Antoni’s team, but have stayed around 50% for just about the entire season. Phoenix has won four of five, and this comes in the middle of key trades (Boris Diaw and Raja Bell to Charlotte for Jason Richardson) and complaints from disgruntled star Amare Stoudemire, who apparently wants out (first Shawn Marion, now him – and you wonder why they never won a title under D’Antoni).

In terms of taking care of the ball, this game offers a contrast. Portland has committed just 12.4 turnovers a game, which ranks fifth best in the NBA. Meanwhile, the Suns have more turnovers than anyone at 15.9 per game. This stat doesn’t necessarily equate to a poor record since Boston and Utah are next on that lost (15.6 each).

What may be more important as we analyze the game is the nature of this matchup from a short term historical perspective.

The mastery Phoenix has had in this series has been astounding, as they have won eleven times in a row and covered 12 of the last sixteen. It doesn’t matter if they’ve been traveling – they have won and covered the last five at the Rose Garden. Under the circumstances we don’t mind taking the points with Phoenix, the five-point underdog in the BetUS NBA pro basketball sports betting odds.
