Jazz vs Wizards

Time: Saturday 7 ET
Venue: Verizon Center, Washington
Spread: Jazz -9
Over/Under: 196

Team records:
Golden State: 19-49 SU, 39-28-1 ATS
Memphis: 36-33 SU, 35-33-1 AT

It’s bad in Washington? How bad is it, as Johnny Carson would have asked. So bad that it has been exactly one month since the Wizards last won a game. So bad that that win was against the Nets, which really shouldn’t even count. Fourteen losses in a row bad.

The Wizards are regular 9- or 10-point dogs, even at home, including tonight’s game against the road-weary and banged-up Jazz.

No more than a few years ago management had things pretty much under control. As soon as Gilbert Arenas got healthy, D.C. would unleash its three-headed monster of Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, and they would hopefully be a reasonable facsimile of the Run TMC 1990s Warriors of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin.

The Wizards would run, score and energize the crowds at the Verizon Center as they made a move toward the top of the Eastern Conference.

It looked good on paper, but injuries to Arenas and Butler derailed the locomotive, and on the bad side of 30 Jamison could hardly pull the train alone. Then the Arenas gun mess pulled the plug on any hopes the team had this season, and management figured it had to start over.

Again. Butler and Jamison were sent to contenders, Arenas skated on the gun charges and the Wizards now begin to start pushing the rock up the hill once more.

Andray Blatche put up some decent numbers when the Wizards surprised a few teams in the days after the All-Star break, but the roster on opening night in 2010-11 will bear little resemblance to the group that is sleepwalking through the final few weeks of the season.

The big question is whether management can complete the circle and figure out a way to dump Arenas and the $80 million he is owed for the next four years. If it can’t, Arenas could ironically be the only significant player left on a team he helped destroy.

Betting Trends:

Utah is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing Washington
Utah is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games when playing on the road against Washington
Utah is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Utah’s last 6 games when playing Washington
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Washington’s last 6 games when playing Utah
Washington is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Utah
The total has gone UNDER in 13 of Washington’s last 19 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Washington’s last 6 games when playing at home against Utah

Jazz vs. Wizards Free Pick: The Jazz would be favored by 11 or 12 were it not for a tough road stretch. This is their 3rd game in 4 nights, and they were absolutely wasted by the Pacers last night. Andrei Kirilenko, coming off a calf injury, had no chance guarding Danny Granger, who went off for 44. The Jazz don’t even practice any more in order to keep players fresh. Utah has motivation, battling with Phoenix, Dallas and Denver for home-court edge in at least one round of the playoffs, but the Jazz won’t expend any more energy than needed in this one. The Wizards could easily get a backdoor cover.
