Trail Blazers vs. Timberwolves

Time: Saturday 8 ET
Venue: Target Center, Minneapolis
Spread: Trail Blazers -3.5
Over/Under: 195 (-110)

It’s been so long since Minnesota actually played in a game that meant anything that you wonder if the Timberwolves will ever turn the corner. They won 22 games two seasons ago, 24 last year, and this season will have to step on the gas pedal to equal those numbers. They sit at 14-46 headed into tonight’s game at home against Portland.

The only thing certain about the Wolves is uncertainty brougt on by a front office that really doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing. Since Stephon Marbury shot his way out of the upper Midwest after the 1999 season because he was jealous of Kevin Garnett, the Wolves have basically spun their wheels. They got to the Western Conference finals once, but a string a first-round exits early in the decade has been followed by annual trips to the draft lottery.

These days the Wolves are trying to piece together a front line. They traded for Darko Milicic in hopes that they can make him comfortable enough to abandon plans to bolt for Europe after this season. Milicic is getting 20 minutes a game and actually got some important minutes in a few games, but it’s doubtful the Wolves can keep him.

At the least Milicic can give some relief to Al Jefferson, a forward forced to play center because there’s no one else. Jefferson was the subject of trade rumors (Pacers turned down a straight-up swap for Danny Granger) and he might not survive the summer, especially if the team decides that the offense should run through PG Jonny Flynn and PF Kevin Love.

SATURDAY NIGHT BEST NBA BET:

Portland traditionally plays well in Minnesota, and more importantly the Blazers are a great cover team on the outside end of back-to-backs (they lost in overtime in Chicago last night.) Portland has 5 straight wins and in 4-1 ATS in the second game of back-to-backs, and should be able to cover 3.5 tonight.

Just as important, two of the three referees (Curtis Blair and Bill Kennedy) both have solid records favoring visiting teams ATS.
