If only the Memphis Grizzlies could start the season over. Dragged down by their dalliance with Allen Iverson, the Grizz lost their opener – at home no less — by the soon-to-be-dogmeat Detroit Pistons, hit the road and lost all 5 games on the West Coast and were staring at a 1-8 hole before even sitting down for Thanksgiving dinner.
All anyone could think about was the Pau Gasol giveaway to the Lakers and if someone local would be interested in buying the team.
Somewhere in the holiday season the young Grizz grew up. Iverson and his massive ego were tossed to the curb and the team’s young legs started to wear down teams. Marc, the other Gasol, became a legitimate big.
Zach Randolph suddenly has matured into a solid citizen and is good for 21 and 12 a game, and the acrobatic Rudy Gay is starting to do things that take the breath away from fans all over the league. O.J. Mayo is a legit scoring 2-guard.
With youth comes stamina, and the Grizzlies’ starting 5 has missed only a few games all season. Every starter has played at least 64 games.
The Grizz are 35-31 heading into tonight’s game at home against Denver, and a victory would enable Memphis to keep playoff heat on San Antonio.
The Grizz have to find a way to catch the Spurs for the final playoff spot, which means they have stay hot and make up a game or two if the Grizzlies-Spurs game April 9 in San Antonio is to have any meaning.
Denver comes in with 5 straight victories and needs to keep winning as the Nuggets are battling Dallas for the No. 2 Western Conference playoff seed.
