Nets vs. Pacers

Time: Saturday 7:00 ET
Venue: Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis
Spread: Pacers -9.5
Over/Under: 210

It was over for the Pacers this season almost before it got started. Indiana won only a few games in December and not many more in January, and that pretty much drew the curtains on any chances the team had of playing any games in late April or early May.

The final 3 spots in the Eastern Conference playoffs were there for the taking all season, but the Pacers had already raised the white flag.

However . . .

In games that no longer count toward anything, the Pacers have undergone somewhat of a re-birth. They have won 9 of their last 11 in a stretch that included solid wins over Utah and Oklahoma City, and a while back put together a streak in which they covered the number 8 straight times and 11 of 12.

What gives?

Certainly it doesn’t hurt that coach Jim O’Brien has the team playing hard while others have gone deep in the tank or decided to rest key personnel for the playoffs. But a win is a win is a win, and Indiana will take them any way they can. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Indiana has hitched its wagon to small forward Danny Granger, who thrives in the team’s upbeat offense. Granger has been virtually unstoppable in the Pacers’ recent surge, going for 31 or more in 7 of the last 10 games.

The problem is in the paint. Indiana gets slaughtered off the boards on a regular basis and ranks 29th of 30 teams in rebounding. Opponents average 5 more a game than the Pacers. Center Roy Hibbert hasn’t been a Hasheem Thabeet-type bust, but O’Brien would no doubt consider it a personal favor if Hibbert could get his hands a little dirtier and start to rebound like someone his size (7-foot-3) rather than a small forward. Figure Indiana to go big in the draft.

Betting Trends:

New Jersey is 8-4 ATS in its last 12 games on the road
Indiana is 10-1 SU in its last 11 games at home
Indiana is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing New Jersey
Indiana is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games when playing New Jersey
Indiana is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of New Jersey’s last 6 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 9 of New Jersey’s last 11 games when playing on the road against Indiana
The total has gone OVER in 16 of New Jersey’s last 23 games when playing Indiana

BEST BET: Betting the law of averages is dangerous, but it’s hard to envision the Nets putting together two decent games in a row. New Jersey was balls to the wall in winning in overtime (over the Bulls) at home Friday night, and all of its key personnel (Courtney Lee, Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, Terrence Williams and Brook Lopez) all logged 40-plus minutes. New Jersey is one of the few teams in the league that has trouble scoring in the paint against Indiana. The line is a bit heavy (9.5), but taking the points makes no sense. NJ is not the punching bag it was early in the season, but the Nets haven’t won on the road since March 6 (New York) and their last 8 games away from home have resulted in losses by the following margins – 19, 10, 9, 23, 10, 10, 11 and 24.
