After losing back-to-back games, the Dallas Mavericks came through with a 93-82 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. Dallas leads the series 3-2, which shifts back to Portland for Game 6 on Thursday.

The Maverick’s improved to 3-0 on their home court in this series with Monday’s win, but now they’ll have to head back to Portland. Game 5 was a success thanks to some hard work on defense and the glass. Portland had a miserable night shooting the ball from three-point land (4-for-16), and the Mavs won the rebounding battle 49-37.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points, but he’s still not playing as well as he did in the regular season. At least somebody other than Nowitzki and Jason Terry (20 points) stepped up. Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion each scored 14 points. Chandler was especially impressive, as he grabbed a whopping 20 rebounds—including 13 on the offensive glass.

Portland didn’t get a big game from anyone on Monday. That’s closely related to the lack of free throw opportunities; the Blazers took just 19 free throw attempts, compared to 35 attempts for Dallas. Portland needs to be much more threatening in the paint. LaMarcus Aldridge scored just 12 points, and he didn’t attempt a single free throw. That needs to change in Game 6.

And after emerging as a hero over the past two games, Brandon Roy cooled off considerably in Game 5. Roy was just 2-for-7 from the field, finishing with five points. Andre Miller was the only standout for the Blazers, as he racked up 18 points and seven assists.

As we’ve seen earlier in this series, Portland is at its best when everyone contributes a solid amount and one player steps up a notch or two above the rest. Nobody really had that extra notch or two in Game 5, but chances are someone will bring it in Game 6, especially in front of the home crowd. Take the Blazers.
