The late game on NBA TV Wednesday night will feature the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Spurs have been one of the biggest surprises of the season thus far, while the Clippers have once again proved to be a huge disappointment.
Weren’t the Spurs supposed to be washed up? The so called “experts” had everyone believing that this team was done about 18 months ago. Gregg Popovich and this team appear to have made other plans, and they are looking like a brand new team this year. The Spurs have started the season with the best record in the NBA, and they appear out to make one final run at another NBA title.
What has changed for the Spurs over the last year? It seems that Popovich has decided to change the strategy with this team, and it is working out brilliantly. The Spurs are third in the NBA in scoring so far this year, averaging 107.2 points per game. This is a team that previously slowed the pace down, but they are now running and getting many more easy shots. San Antonio is also crashing the offensive boards on a consistent basis, something they did effectively several years ago. Richard Jefferson was a huge disappointment last year, but he has looked great to start out this season.
Blake Griffin has been as advertised for the Los Angeles Clippers. Griffin provides plenty of highlights on a nightly basis, which has helped with ticket sales. Unfortunately for the fans, the team as a whole has been awful. Clippers fans are used to disappointment, but they were certainly hoping for something better than what they have seen thus far this year. The Clippers are just 3-15 and they are once again one of the worst teams in the league.
There is no single area that the Clippers have struggled in; rather they have just been bad at everything. Vinny Del Negro is known as a defensive minded coach, but the Clippers rank 29th in the NBA in field goal percentage defense. Eric Gordon is having a big year for the Clippers, but for the most part this team has underachieved. There is certainly some talent here to work with, but these guys are young, so it might take a while for them to get things ironed out. In the interim, the Clippers better start knocking down of their free throws. They are second to last in the NBA in free throw percentage at just 70.4%. They have lost several close games this year, and with a few more made free throws those could have been wins.

The Spurs are a totally different team than we have been accustomed to seeing the last few years. They will push the pace in this one and get plenty of easy hoops. San Antonio is liable to be a bit tired on the back end of a back-to-back after winning late Tuesday night in Golden State. I think the tired legs will allow some easy Clippers buckets as well. I like the over in this one.
