The Portland Blazers are now under .500 after losing to Memphis on Monday night. Portland has been hot and cold all year long, but they haven’t performed up to expectations. The Dallas Mavericks had their 12 game winning streak halted by the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night. Dallas had a 20 point lead before losing that game, so they certainly let one slip away. These teams have had some good battles before, and I expect both teams to play hard tonight.
The Blazers play in what is probably the NBA’s toughest division, so their struggles early on in the season have really hurt their chances of getting back to the playoffs. This is a team that has quite a bit of talent, but they must put it together soon. The single biggest problem for this Portland team is that they aren’t playing the type of defense they have in the past few years. Portland is a slow-paced team, and they usually shut down opponents very well on the defensive end.
This year they have been no better than mediocre defensively, which simply isn’t good enough. They are 14th in the NBA in field goal percentage defense, and they are allowing 94.6 points per game. Wesley Matthews has played well for the Blazers and LaMarcus Aldridge has been strong as well. Brandon Roy’s numbers are down significantly from last year, and he has been dealing with a nagging knee injury. Portland is shooting just 43% from the floor this year, so they’ll need to get better from the field if they are going to make a playoff push.
The Mavericks have the second best record in the Western Conference this year. Dallas has done a very good job on the defensive end, which has been the key for them this season. Dirk Nowitzki is having a career year on the offensive. Nowitzki is shooting an amazing 56% from the floor so far this year, which is truly remarkable considering how difficult some of his shots are. The forward combination of Shawn Marion and Caron Butler gives the Mavericks a great duo of long and athletic scorers. Tyson Chandler has been a great defensive presence down low, which the Mavericks have been missing in the last few years. Dallas is shooting 47.8% from the field this year, and they are allowing their opponents to shoot just 43.4%. This is a team that does everything well, and they will be a very difficult out come playoff time.

Portland will not push the pace at all in this one, and Dallas is usually happy to have the game be decided in the half-court set. I think this will probably be a close game most of the way, but I do think Dallas wins. I like the under in this one.
