The Los Angeles Lakers finished their 4-2, but they can’t be too pleased right now, since they lost their final two games on the trip. The loss to Charlotte on Monday was particularly displeasing to Phil Jackson, who said “We are embarrassed with how we played.” The Lakers were down as many as 28 points to the Bobcats before losing by 20 points. Still, the Lakers did show they can beat high quality teams on the road, and their victory in Boston was a big psychological win.
On the other side, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally ended their miserable losing streak at 26 games against the Los Angeles Clippers Friday. They then got to take on the Washington Wizards, who hadn’t won a road game all year, on Sunday night. The Wizards blew out the Cavs and showed this Cleveland team they still have a ton of work to do to be competitive.
Kobe Bryant has been dealing with the flu, and he was visible out of his comfort zone on Monday night in Charlotte. In the long run, the Lakers will badly need a healthy Bryant, but in this game, they could probably win easily even without him. Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol have both been playing well, and they should be too much for the Cleveland frontcourt, which is undersized right now. Andrew Bynum could use this as a game to pile up some big statistics as well.
The Lakers have actually been very good on the road this year. Los Angeles is 19-10 on the year, and they are 15-13-1 ATS on the road. Los Angeles really needs some of their role players like Derek Fisher and Ron Artest to start playing better basketball. The Lakers haven’t had a consistent three-point shooter this year, which clogs up the paint and makes it more difficult for Kobe to get to the basket. This is a team that seems to be improving over the last couple weeks, and they’ll get a chance to beat up a bottom-feeder on Wednesday.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have the worst record in the NBA right now. This was a team that had been showing better effort for the last few weeks, but their terrible home loss to Washington was a huge step in the wrong direction on Sunday night. No doubt these players will remember that they were beaten 112-57 just a few weeks ago in Los Angeles. Can this team show some major pride and give the reigning champs all they can handle? J.J. Hickson has been stepping up and making a name for himself over the last few weeks, and Antawn Jamison has been producing at a consistent pace.
Mo Williams is back in the lineup now, which gives the Cavs another scorer and should make them a little more competitive. This is a team that is terrible on the defensive end, and that is their number one problem right now. Cleveland allows 106 points per game, and their opponents are shooting a staggering 43% from beyond the arc this year.
