The Los Angeles Lakers have been out of whack recently, but they did put together a great second half last night at home against Detroit. Was that just a fluke against a terrible Pistons team or are the Lakers ready to turn the corner? The Phoenix Suns are having a difficult season, but they are still a solid team at home, and they will be geared up for a game against the defending champions. ESPN will have coverage of this west coast showdown in the desert.

The Los Angeles Lakers are 24-11, but they sure haven’t been playing like the defending champions in recent weeks. Ron Artest and Phil Jackson aren’t getting along well, and this Lakers team has looked confused at times of late. Blowout losses at home to both Milwaukee and Memphis really made people wonder about this team.

I believe the Lakers are in a funk right now, but I also believe that Jackson will have this team playing its best basketball come playoff time. Any pundit who is writing this team off because of their recent poor play is crazy. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Lakers are actually 10-8 ATS away from home this year, and they had a nice road trip in the east a couple weeks ago. Ron Artest has been disappointing so far this year. He is averaging just 7.5 points per game. Kobe Bryant is shooting just 44.4% from the floor this year, which is his lowest mark since the 04-05 season.

The Lakers are still a deep team that can win it all, but they must improve their team chemistry.

The Phoenix Suns have a new look team after the major trade with Orlando just before Christmas. Vince Carter is averaging 18 points per game in his first three games as a Sun, and Mikael Pietrus is averaging 11. While there wasn’t a lot of talk about him when the deal occurred, the acquisition of Marcin Gortat may be the most important to this Phoenix team.

Gortat has proven a capable scorer and a terrific defender at the center spot. The Suns have needed someone like him for a while now. Why are the Suns just 14-18 so far this year?

It all comes down to defense, like it normally does for this team. Phoenix is allowing opponents to shoot 48.5% from the floor, and they are giving up 108.4 points per game.

The Suns are also one of the worst teams in the NBA on the boards, so they certainly hope Gortat will help in that area. Phoenix has some talent, but they seem to be lacking the pieces to make another run in the playoffs.

NBA Betting Trends:

LA Lakers are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 6 of the LA Lakers last 8 games when playing Phoenix
The total has gone UNDER in 10 of the LA Lakers last 14 games on the road
LA Lakers are 12-5 SU in their last 17 games when playing Phoenix
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Phoenix’s last 8 games when playing LA Lakers
Phoenix is 16-7 SU in their last 23 games when playing at home against LA Lakers
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Phoenix’s last 6 games when playing at home against LA Lakers
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Phoenix’s last 6 games at home

The Pick:

The Lakers did play last night, but their starters got to rest plenty because of their huge win over the Pistons. Phoenix has lost five of their last six games, and I think the Lakers will win this one. I like the Lakers to cover the spread here.
