Both the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks have dropped two of their last three games. Ironically, both of these teams dropped two games in a row at home, only to come back and win their most recent game on the road. Atlanta has won both of the two meetings this year, so New York will be looking for some payback in this one. Both of these teams are jockeying for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, and this is an important game.
The Atlanta Hawks have been one of the best road teams in the NBA this year. The Hawks are 17-11 straight-up on the road, and they are 16-12 ATS on the road. Lately, it has been Josh Smith who has really picked up the production on the offensive end. Monday against Detroit he scored 27 points and hauled in 14 rebounds. He is averaging 25 points per game in their last four contests. Joe Johnson is back and healthy, which is a huge plus for this team. Johnson is the Hawks leading scorer at 20 points per game.
The guy who is having a real breakout season is Al Horford. Horford is shooting 57% from the floor, and averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Horford has been dealing with a nagging back injury, but he is expected to play in this game. Atlanta has slowed the tempo down quite a bit, and they have held opponents to just 95.3 points per game.
The New York Knicks have been an extremely streaky team so far this year. They started cold and then became the hottest team in the league, only to endure some more cold streaks of late.
Clearly, this team is far better than they were this time last year. Amar’e Stoudemire is the single biggest reason. Stoudemire is averaging 26.2 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. While Stoudemire has gotten nearly all of the credit, Raymond Felton has been a key addition to the team as well. Felton is the team’s second leading scorer, and he is dishing out assists at the highest rate of his career. Landry Fields has been a pleasant surprise as a rookie, and Wilson Chandler is having his best year as a professional.
The Knicks are a much better team when Danilo Gallinari is playing well. Gallinari is averaging 15.9 points per game, but he is shooting just 41.4% from the field. Both Stoudemire and Gallinari are dinged up, but both are listed as probable for this game. The Knicks struggle on the defensive glass, which has lost them several games this year. New York is allowing 106.1 points per game, and their defense just isn’t very good. This is a much improved team, but they still have quite a few areas to improve in.

The Knicks haven’t been that great at home this year, and the Hawks have been a good road team all year long. The Hawks seem to matchup quite well with the Knicks.
I think Atlanta’s defense will slow down the Knicks enough to help them pull off a nice road victory in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.
