ATS Matchup Insight | CP Insider Gambling Preview

In three matchups, Portland has walked away victorious twice. The only loss came on Feb. 19 and was by two points, offering the question: What is more important—recent success or overall success?

Portland

Unfortunately for the Trail Blazers, even recent success hasn’t gone their way as of late. It’s true that the team has won two out of the last three against the Spurs, but it has also lost its last three overall—and four of its last five—and has virtually no momentum in the midst of a crucial late-season road trip.

Against the Spurs on Wednesday, Portland must look to control the pace.

San Antonio is also coming off of a game the night prior, but it’s the Blazers who have the younger legs and the more potent offense, and would benefit from pushing the tempo and scoring in transition.

Portland’s biggest problem as of late has been closing out games. In this one, the team needs to get a lead early, and with recent trends going against them, they need to keep it all the way to the end.

San Antonio

Year after year we assume that the San Antonio Spurs’ championship window has closed, and year after year Gregg Popovich and his crew prove us all wrong.

With the playoffs in sight, the Spurs own the best record in the competitive Western Conference.

The team is getting the most out of both its stars and its role players—as usual—and this matchup will be a good simulation of what it could end up seeing in the second round of the postseason.

Giving up points to the Trail Blazers isn’t a big deal, as Portland’s defense will allow you to get them right back.

Making them take tough shots is the more realistic goal (than holding them below 100), and then, of course, scoring on their mostly porous defense.

A high-scoring game usually benefits the better offense, which in this case is Portland, but in this scenario, the Spurs are nearly as productive.

Expect another high-scoring game, like the last time they faced off, with the final result once again ending up in San Antonio’s favor.

Prediction: San Antonio 113 – Portland 107
