The Phoenix Suns will look to get over .500 when they take on the Southwest Division-leading San Antonio Spurs tonight at the AT&T Center. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m.

The loss of Amar’e Stoudemire to New York this past offseason has made Phoenix a very ordinary team this season. Through 26 games the Suns are 13-13 straight-up (10-15-1 against the spread). They are already seven games behind the LA Lakers in the Pacific Division and in ninth place in the Western Conference.

This weekend’s trade which sent Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Earl Clark to Orlando for Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat will not have an impact on this game as they will not be available to play until later in the week.

They started the month of December with a three-game winning streak, but have lost four out of their last six games ever since. Phoenix did split its last two games with a 106-91 loss to Dallas as a 7 ½-point road underdog on Friday, followed by a 113-110 victory over Oklahoma City as a 9 ½-point road underdog this past Sunday. A win tonight would give them consecutive roads game victories for the first time this season.

Steve Nash and Grant Hill have combined to try and fill the void left by Stoudemire, but so far it has not been nearly enough. Nash leads the team with 17.6 points and 10.2 assists per game and Hill is averaging 14.8 points. Channing Frye leads the team in rebounds with 6.2 per game. Phoenix is shooting 47.9 percent from the floor and averaging 108.4 points per game, while giving up an average of 109.9 points per game.

San Antonio burst out of the gates this season by winning 13 of its first 14 games and has yet to cool down. The Spurs have the best record in the league at 23-3 SU (16-9-1 ATS) and are in the midst of an eight game winning streak. They have gone 9-1 SU in their last 10 games, but are clinging to just a two-game lead over the equally red-hot Dallas Mavericks in the Southwest Division.

They come into this game off a tight 113-112 win over Denver this past Thursday as a one-point road underdog and a 112-106 OT win over Memphis as a 11 ½-point home favorite on Sunday. Manu Ginobili (19.8 points per game) and Tony Parker (17.9 PPG) are the Spurs two leading scorers while Tim Duncan leads the team in rebounds with 9.5 per game. As a team, they are hitting 47.4 percent of their shots from the floor and averaging 106.3 point per game. Defensively, they are holding their opponents to an average of 97.2 points per game.

Trends:

Phoenix is 2-2-1 ATS in its last six road games but just 1-5 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its last five games overall.
San Antonio is 4-3 ATS in its last seven games at home and 5-2 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last five games overall.

Head-to-head, the Suns have won five out of the last six games SU and are 7-1 ATS in the last eight, but the Spurs won their first meeting this season 112-110 as a one-point home favorite. The line for this game is currently OFF due to Saturday’s trade, but you would have to expect San Antonio to be favored by a few points come game time if they decide to set one.

The Suns lack of consistency, especially on the road, remains a concern no matter who is in their lineup so stick with the Spurs tonight unless the line creeps up to five points or more.

The Pick: San Antonio
