Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview

Tonight in the Big D old Western Conference rivals Dallas (20-5) plays host to Phoenix (12-12). NBA lines have the Mavericks as 7-point favorites in this game with a total of 210.5.

In their last games the Mavs got back on track beating the Portland Trailblazers 103-98 on Wednesday night after having their 12-game winning streak snapped the previous game and the Suns beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-122 in a shootout also on Wednesday night.

This season the Mavs have been a solid team to lay some green on going 14-9-2 ATS while the Suns are only 9-14-1 ATS. Phoenix is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Dallas and in the last 7 games between these 2 teams the home team is 5-2 ATS.

The Mavs are 12-5 at home this season and are 9-1 in their last 10 games while Phoenix is 5-7 on the road this season and is 5-5 in their last 10 games. Dallas has beat Phoenix 6 straight games in their house.

In the Mavericks 12-game winning streak their defense was stellar holding opponents to only 93 ppg on 43.4% shooting, but in their last 2 games they have allowed an average of 100.5 ppg on 48.5% shooting. They will have to play some defense tonight against a Suns’ squad that is the highest scoring team in the league. The Suns need to score a ton of points since they are the worst defensive team in the league giving up an average of 110 ppg.

The Suns’ defense should get better with the return of C Robin Lopez (6 ppg 4.7 rpg), who is a big body in the middle and a solid defender.

Phoenix likes to run-and-gun led by Steve Nash (18.1 ppg 10.6 assists per game) and the Mavs can play that game as well, but if Dallas can slow the pace of the game it gives them a much better chance to win. The Suns are a high scoring team, but if they are held to a half court game they are not as dangerous.

Both Channing Frye and Grant Hill have the unenviable task of trying to slow down a red-hot Dirk Nowitzki, who is averaging 25 ppg and in his last 7 games is shooting over 63% from the field. They also have to worry about Caron Butler (14.3 ppg), who is coming off scoring a career high 23 points in the Mavs’ last game. NBA Betting

Lopez and Frye will also have to hit the boards hard tonight and Phoenix only ranks 28th in the league in rebounds per game. They cannot allow Tyson Chandler (9 rpg), Nowitzki (7.7 rpg), and Shaun Marion (5.9 rpg) from killing them on the glass. They can do that by getting out and running and if Nash can be the catalyst to an up-tempo game then the Suns have a better chance to win. The Dallas PG duo of Jason Kidd and Jason Terry have to keep Nash from getting out on the break and if they can slow him down the Mavs should easily win this game.

The Suns hit on 55.6% (16/27) of their 3-point bombs in the win over Minnesota and if they do not hit the long ball in this game they are in trouble. They will really have to rely on the 3 if they cannot get out and run. Jason Richardson (19.6 ppg), Nash, Frye (11.3 ppg), and Hill (14.6 ppg) will be counted on to carry the offensive load tonight.

Phoenix did win their last game, but they only won by 6 points over lowly Minnesota and they were at home. Dallas is a much better team and they are home where they are tough to beat. The Mavs will have no problem scoring on the weak Suns’ D and they will not totally shut down Phoenix offense, but they will play well enough to win by a comfortable margin and cover the 7-point spread.

Betting Trends

Phoenix is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games and is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog of 5.0-10.5 and Dallas is 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

Even with a high 210.5 total in this game the Over is a good pick since the Mavs have an Over record in their last 6 games and Phoenix has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games. On top of that in the last 5 meetings between these 2 teams the total has gone Over every time.

Pick: Mavericks -7
