Orlando Magic vs. Chicago Bulls Preview

Tonight in an Eastern Conference match up that may be a preview of a late playoff series the streaking Chicago Bulls (31-14) host the Orlando Magic (30-16). NBA lines have the Magic as slight 1-point favorites in this game with a total of 187.

Chicago has won 3 straight and is 8-2 in their last 10 games, but all is not well in the Windy City, as in last 4 games for Chicago they have shot less than 40% from the field. On top of that All Star starter Derrick Rose has been diagnosed with a couple of stomach ulcers that have left his energy drained. Rose (24.1 ppg) is only averaging 13.1 ppg in his career against the Magic, which is the lowest average against any team in the league.

The Bulls have had 3 days off to rest and that may help Rose, but they also had 3 days off before playing Orlando in November and they suffered their worst loss of the season falling to the Magic 107-78.

In their last games the Magic beat the Indiana Pacers 111-96 on Wednesday night and the Bulls beat the Milwaukee Bucks 92-83.

This season the Bulls have been one of the best betting teams in the league going 25-18-2 ATS while the same cannot be said for the Magic who are 21-24-1 ATS. In the last 5 games between these 2 teams the Magic have covered the spread 4 times.

While Magic C Dwight Howard (22 ppg 13.4 rpg) would seem to be the guy the Bulls have to worry about that is simply not the case. In the last 3 games against Chicago he has only averaged 14.3 ppg and 10.7 rpg, which are well below his averages, but the Magic have won those games by an average of 26 points. NBA Betting

Jason Richardson (17.1 ppg) and Ryan Anderson (10.1 ppg) both drained 4 3-point bombs in the win over Indiana on Wednesday and for the season each is hitting on over 40% of their long-range shots. The Bulls’ backcourt has to have good movement and not give them open looks from deep.

Bulls’ leading rebounder Joakim Noah is still out with a thumb injury so
Carlos Boozer (19.9 ppg 10 rpg) and C Kurt Thomas (6.2 rpg) have to hit the boards tonight, especially keeping Howard off the offensive glass.

The Bulls’ defense ranks 3rd in the league in opponents’ points allowed and they will have to rely on their D if their offense woes continue tonight. That is a distinct possibility against the Magic, who are also a legit team on defense ranking 7th in opponents’ points allowed.

SF Luol Deng (17.4 ppg) is a key player tonight, as he will have to have a good scoring game and knock down his open J’s. If he struggles to score Rose and Boozer will have to carry the offensive load. Boozer may have trouble scoring in the paint with Superman Howard, who ranks 5th in the league in blocks per game, waiting for him.

The Bulls have the 2nd best home record in the league with only 4 losses, but they will have 5 after tonight. Howard will have a good game, but the Magic’s other scorers will carry the team and the Bulls will continue to struggle shooting the rock. The Magic will snap the Bulls’ 3-game winning streak tonight and cover the 1-point spread.

Betting Trends

Orlando is 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 road games and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games as a favorite and Chicago is 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog of 0.5-4.5.

Even though both teams have a solid defense and the Under would seem to be a good pick I would stay away from laying money on that wager. While the Bulls have an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 home games the Magic have an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games.

Pick: Magic -1
