Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Orlando Magic Preview

In a big-non conference nationally televised game on Friday night the Orlando Magic (36-22) host the Oklahoma City Thunder (36-20).

Even though the Magic are the team that, many think, have a legit chance to make it tot the NBA finals they have the same amount of wins as the Thunder, but have 2 more losses.

In their last games both teams played on Wednesday with the Magic losing to the Sacramento Kings 111-105 while the Thunder lost to the San Antonio Spurs 109-105.

This season the Thunder are 16-12 on the road and the Magic are 21-9 at home.

The Thunder have been a slightly better betting team on the season at 29-27 ATS, as the Magic have an under .500 wagering record at 26-31-1. In the last 6 games between these 2 teams in Orlando the total has gone Under 5 times.

One big question in this game is can the Thunder keep Magic C Dwight Howard from having a big game? Howard leads the Magic in scoring (23 ppg) and rebounding (13.9 rpg) and one of the main weaknesses of the Thunder is their inside defense. They tried to address that situation in the last draft, but rookie C Cole Aldridge has been a bust so far. However, they recently traded for Boston C Kendrick Perkins and G Nate Robinson and maybe Perkins can give them some inside muscle, which they sorely need.

The Magic have a great defense ranking 6th in the league in opponents’ points allowed, but their D let them down last night allowing the lowly Kings to score 111 points. It is no secret what their job is in this game. Kevin Durant (28.2 ppg) and Russell Westbrook (22.1 ppg) are the 2 big scoring treats for the Thunder and even though this duo combined for 55 points in the loss to the Spurs neither shot over 50% from the field and they only combined to make 1 of their 5 3-point shots. NBA Betting

If The Thunder cannot light up the scoreboard they will likely not win, as they only rank 20th in the league in opponents’ points per game.

James Harden (10.6 ppg) has to help Durant and Wetsbrook out in the scoring department and they will not get much more help since 3rd leading scorer Jeff Green was sent to Boston in the deal to get Perkins and Robinson.

The Thunder only shot 40.7% from the floor in the San Antonio game and they will have to shoot the rock better against the Magic.

The Thunder cannot pack the lane to stop Howard since the Magic have so many good shooters. Orlando has 5 players that are averaging in double figures and are shooting over 35% from 3-pt land. The Magic struggled from deep in the loss to the Kings only hitting on 8/28 (28.6%) of their 3-pt bombs.

Jason Richardson (13.6 ppg) and Hedo Turkoglu (10.9 ppg) are starting to look comfortable in the Orlando offense after coming over in the trade from Phoenix. Richardson is key in this game, as he has to score and also play good defense.

The key in this game is the inside defense of the Thunder, which is not good, as they do not play much. Howard will have another big game and dominate the boards. I think Westbook and Durant will combine to score a lot of points, but the Oklahoma City defense will not keep Orlando from lighting up the scoreboard. The Magic may have let their guard down in the loss last night to the Kings, but that will not happen in this game. Orlando will win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Oklahoma City is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games against teams with a winning home record and is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game. Orlando is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games against team with a winning road record.

Pick: Orlando
