Denver Nuggets (16-10)

For a team on the verge of trading its superstar, the Denver Nuggets haven’t been half bad this season. They’ve won six of their last 10 games and field the NBA’s third-best offense with 107.3 points per game.

Carmelo Anthony has been a force as usual, averaging 24 points and 8.3 boards as he awaits his ticket to New Jersey or New York. But he’s had plenty of support. Amazingly, seven different Nuggets average 10.7 points per game or more: Anthony, Nene, Chauncey Billups, Al Harrington, Arron Afflalo, J.R. Smith and Ty Lawson.

Defense has been a sore spot for the Nuggets this year, as they rank 25th in the league with 105.1 points allowed per game. But they could get a boost tonight; Kenyon Martin is questionable to make his season debut and would help the Nuggets in the rebounding and shot-blocking department. Same goes for Chris “The Birdman” Andersen, who has missed the last eight games with a back injury.

Denver isn’t hot from a betting perspective, having gone 2-7 against the spread over its last nine games.

San Antonio Spurs (24-3)

For all the hype the Heat, Celtics, Lakers and Knicks get, the San Antonio Spurs are right on pace with the 1996 Chicago Bulls, challenging for the single-season wins record. They embody the team concept; as Tim Duncan ages, he is gradually accepting reduced playing time to stay fresh and doing a fine job. He plays 29 minutes per game this year and averages 14.1 points and 9.7 boards.

With Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Richard Jefferson and company taking turns being the Spurs’ top contributor every night, it seems depth has been the secret to San Antonio’s success this season.

The Spurs enter tonight having won nine straight games but, thanks to a strange schedule, eight of those were played at home.

The pick:

There are admittedly some strange betting trends in this series; the underdog and the road team has beaten the spread nine straight times. But I’m not sure if Denver will hang with San Antonio tonight. The Nuggets are 5-16-2 ATS over their last 23 road games; the Spurs have won three straight meetings, two of them by 19 or more points; and the constant threat of the Melo trade has to take its toll on Denver sooner or later.

UPDATE: The Nuggets have announced that Carmelo Anthony will not play tonight due to a death in his family. Most books have kept the line up but shifted it to eight points.

Score prediction: Spurs 114, Nuggets 98
