Give credit to the Portland Trail Blazers for being a remarkably resilient bunch this season. No Brandon Roy, no Greg Oden, no Marcus Camby – the list goes on, yet the Blazers continue to stay alive in the Western Conference playoff push. They’ve won eight of their last 12 games, a run that includes victories over the powerful Bulls and Spurs.
The common denominator in those two big victories: LaMarcus Aldridge. He scored 40 or more points in both of those games. We keep expecting him to break down under a huge workload but he continues to rise to the occasion.
The Blazers are so-so from a betting perspective this season, going 24-25-3 against the spread overall and 10-14-3 ATS on the road. However, with the spread only at three points for their trip to Toronto, this is almost a pick ’em. If you think the Blazers win tonight, chances are it’ll be by at least three points.
The lowly Toronto Raptors have to be very thankful for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ epic losing streak; it distracts the league from just how bad the Raps have been this season. Toronto has lost 15 of its last 16 games. You could make a case that the Raps are just as bad as Cleveland. Defense isn’t in their vocabulary; opponents shoot an NBA-high 48.4 per cent against them for the year.
The Raps have seen a few mild offensive bright spots this season; Andrea Bargnani’s 21.3 points per game are nothing to sneeze at and sophomore DeMar DeRozan has responded to increased playing time with 15.7 points per game. But this team is going nowhere until it learns how to stop opponents from scoring.
Even from a betting perspective, you can’t touch the Raps with a 10-foot pole right now. They’re 1-7 ATS over their last eight. I think the Blazers win easily tonight – with Aldridge shredding Toronto for at least 30 points and 10 boards.
